Locs in the Desert!
I just moved to a climate with desert-like conditions and I'd appreciate your guidance on how to keep my locs moisturized on a daily, weekly, monthly basis.... My locs are almost a year old (October 2012) so I'm still new to this....
I know I don't want to go to bed with wet hair.
Should I rinse my locs every morning and then maybe put some kind of spritz to seal the moisture? I ordered the Hair Dew from Oyin and I was thinking I could use that but then I'm concerned about build up.
Still figuring out how often I should be washing. I was concerned about locs unraveling that's why I hadn't been washing as much.
I know glycerin is a humectant...what could I mix that preserves moisture and so my hair can smell good yet subtle.
I do drink water but I could always up my intake.
Thanks for your help!

Hello new life,
I don't live in the desert but, if I don't stay on it my locs feel dry.
Every morning I rinse with water to rehydrate them (I am 3 months into my third loc journey) then I follow with a jojoba, avocado oil, sweet almond oil.
I retwist once a month with my honey child loc butter and oyin burnt sugar pomade.
peace, love n light~taraji

Glycerin isn't good in a dry climate. As a humectant it will take whatever moisture is available. If there's none available in the atmosphere, then it will pull the moisture from your hair, drying it out. The hair care outlined by jahgydez seems good, though there will of course be some trial and error with the best oil and frequency of rinsing for you.
Covering your locs when you can should help to give some protection from the dry air.

Perhaps a light conditioner fingered through your locks at night, then rinse in the morining. (Sounds like you should try an overnight treatment)

I'm not sure if you are still looking for input, but I live in Phoenix and I use almond oil, castor oil and I seal it with 100% cocoa butter (not Palmers)
I only have to apply it twice a week because I cover my hair most of the time, but it definately works. HTH!Last Perm: April 1997
