LOC EMERGENCY: Unexplained, hard to wash out scalp gunk!
I'm hoping someone has a solution otherwise I may have to cut my 10 year old locs!
Okay...so I go to wash my hair. Same shampoo I've been using for months. Jamaican Mango & Lime Tingle shampoo. I start to notice a creamy, white gunk starting to form on my scalp while washing. WTH??? I look at my fingernails and see this stuff. It's a lot. It's like the water and shampoo activated something because this was not noticeable before the wash. I'm using the same products for maintenance in between washes. Taliah Waajid Protective Mist. Used the stuff for years. The more I try to wash it out the worse it gets and it's spreading down to my locs! Here's a pic:
Now the only thing that's changed is last time I used olive oil on my scalp and hair after my wash. I've used olive oil before...but this was a different kind I've used for the first time. It's one of the fancy, fresh made olive oils. Could it be that it built up on my scalp. Ugh. This is horrible. I may have to cut it if I can't get it out. There was no evidence of this stuff on my scalp before the wash.

I'd try a clarifying shampoo or ACV wash/rinse a few times before cutting.

I can't use JML products...stopped using them the first few months of loc'ing I couldn't get it to rinse cleanly. I say get you some paul mitchell #2 shampoo and use some ACV and baking soda. You may have to do several rounds with REALLY hot water.
Good Luck~Never allow someone with limited vision to limit yours~

I'd say the shampoo is activating an oil build up of some sort. If it's not itching or sore, I would not cut my dreads, what happens after your hair dries?
Instigating and waiting for the REVOLUTION to begin!

I say keep it simple an use a clarifying shampoo, that should get rid of the gunk you have now. If you use a mild shampoo you should do a deep cleansing once in a while to prevent this from happening, either with a clarifying shampoo or an ACV and baking soda rinse.

If its an oil based buildup, then I suggest something that's going to cut that oil. Have you tried dawn dish detergent? I don't know about the shampoo you had been using, my best guess is that it doesn't cut oil all that well, and thus wasn't washing out the previous applications of oil you had been applying very well.
Ive had much better luck with dawn dish detergents, or neutragena anti residu shampoo than most clarifying shampoos, for some reason.
If that doesn't work, I have even went so far as using borax to get stubborn buildup out of my locs, but u have to follow that up with a sort of acidic treatment, like lemon juice or acv rinse. I might get flogged for saying it, but I haven't had a problem with it, and if it's a last resort before cutting them off anyway, then it's worth a try.

Haven't dried it yet. Right now I have my mother going through my hair with a hot towel and running it out.

As all the posts have indicated, it sounds like buildup in the locks. The oil turning white is due to the addition of water/shampoo which has partially emulsified the oil, but not enough to wash it all away.
In addition to the suggestions above, it's worth doing a bath/loc soak. Laying in a bath of water to saturate the locs right up to the scalp, by laying back in the water. Keep it saturated for about 20-30 minutes. Just dipping back, allowing the water to coat the scalp, every few minutes will ensure they remain saturated.
Once they've had a good soak, apply one of the suggestions on the other posts, such as a clarifying shampoo.

Okay...I'm slowly backing away from the edge. Was able to rub a lot of if out with a hot towel to the scalp. Now I'm going to try an ACV rinse. Never tried one before but I'm optimistic. Will post pic afterwards.

Paul Mitchell clarifying shampoo helped me when mine had build up.
