Goodness, that has made the difference! I'm glad it all worked out.
Regarding the BS, the jury seems to be out on this. I don't know if this helps, but I sometimes take BS orally. Initially it's heated in water, then I let it cool down in the fridge, once it's cold I drink it.
What I notice is that initially it does appear to dissolve in the water. However, after it's been sitting a while, a film settles in the bottom of the glass to form a thin crust. So it would appear that if doesn't dissolve completely, just enough to be invisible until it begins to settle.

Wow! I am glad it worked out for you. I had major build up too. I was one of them that used Dawn. I do not why but Dawn seem to cut through all that gunk and I would use an essential oil afterwards. It worked too well because eventually those locks had some weak spots in them. With the gunk removed it only left the areas thinned where hair should have been. Eventually, I had to cut them off. I do not use any excess product anymore. I cannot use Dr. Bronner's castile soap even diluted because I would get this white film afterwards. Now its Afflia black soap and just coconut oil. ACV rinse twice a month. Better results!!!!!

^^ hey delleaux, would you say that the dawn soap was a direct cause of thinning? because that's the only product that worked on my babies. and i don't want my babies to thin out. please shed some light on this! thanks.

I'm sure delleaux will be here to answer herself but my guess is that the buildup caused the thinning--taking up space where hair should've been. When she removed it via Dawn, it revealed the weak areas created by the buildup.

Dellx-I wish I knew you were going through something as well. Do you have picture updates? I know that I ended up cutting my BLs in 2012 because as I picked and cleansed, I quickly learned the same.
CBL-Im just against anything of powder consistency now. I used to think diluting BS in ACV was good enough. Bottom line, the solute(solid) is only a part of the solution when it's in the solvent(ACV). It it's not suspended in solution, it can dry out and remain in the hair if not rinsed thoroughly. It's a solution going in, if it doesn't come out it can dessicate into the original form it was. Think of a glass of kool-aid left out in the sun. Once all the water evaporates, you see the sugar and powder residue left behind. Same concept. It is water-soluble. However, just MHO, once locks are mature, it's a lot harder to get stuf out of them because of the tight matrix. That's where the danger comes. I would encourage a lot of soaking and rinsing.
other than that BS is not like clay but it can behave like clay if not washed out..every. single. grain...and who can be sure of that?
As for me and my new locks-I'm staying away from anything that's a powder, point, blank, period. The cost was tooooo great all the way around. I did BS with my baby BLs(0-3yrs), looking back I think it was ok bc the matrix wasn't tight and matted yet.

I washed the video Knotty Author and all I could think was oh my goodness! I just couldn't. If it ever takes that much...chop, chop! Soak for a long time in the bath though, I can manage. Her locks are beautiful though.

Re: LOC EMERGENCY: Unexplained, hard to wash out scalp gunk!
I have been working on my locs for a long time. The oil thing? Do a bath/loc soak (from an amateur perspective, I am not a pro so I might be wrong)
