I'm not going to beat this horse any further but...

IMO box braids and "Celie plaits" are two different things. There's actual intention behind box braids. The partings involved make box braids an actual style.

"Celie plaits" are not a style. I'm sitting with my hair in 10 fat twists right now (because I wasn't feeling the WNG today). They're too short to pull back and they're not done with any deliberate intention: I just grabbed hunks of hair and twisted. The one at my crown is sticking straight up in the air. If I walked out of my house looking like this people would think I was crazy, especially black folks...I can just SEE the shocked faces, lol.

Not every configuration of hair on someone's head constitutes an actual style. I cosign Karibana (again): "Celie plaits" are the equivalent of rollers. Now some folks don't mind walking out of the house with their rollers showing...but it's NOT a style.

That style just reminds me of the way little girls used to wear their hair back in the day, before 3 year olds were getting perms. I wore my hair like that till I was about 9. I think they're cute. But they're not socially acceptable for grown women, for whatever reason.

Back when I was growing out my fro, I wore my hair like that to choir practice one evening and got teased mercilessly by all the women there (two of whom were naturals).

to be fair though, some of you are wearing braids that are smaller than ceelie braids

when i think of ceelie braids i think of braids/twists the size of which you'd quickly put in your hair overnight if you're wearing loose hair just to keep your hair from tangling. for me that works out to 5-6 braids.

ETA : i see lbelle beat me to it

I checked out the pics and they look fine to me, but they don't look like Celie braids. Aren't they the fat braids with big parts? That look on me needs to stay in the house. I'd look like a refugee. Nope. Not for me!

Naw, I wouldn't wear this out of the house. I would unbraid it and wear a fro. I agree that this is not a style.

aww man i clicked that i would wear em under a cover, but for some reason when i did this style with loose hair it would stick up like freakazoid, but when i did a similar style with my locs they lay down flat and i loved them:

many people complimented this style on me. i consider these "celie braids" or whatever because they were done with no parting (freeforming) they were chunky as hell, i had one helluva bicep workout putting them in. i did however put rubberbands at the end, so i don't know if that cancels out the "celie braids" equation, and i don't know if this term is suited only for loose hair. a braid is a braid is a braid.

i think it may be a style for some people. what constitutes "style" for one person may not for another. i see some ladies going out with pajamas in the streets like they real pants, i don't see that as a "style" but it was/is, for some, at one point.

^ I used this style to create waves for a weekend style when loose and gone to work. I admit I put all the loc braids in a ponytail.
