Does any one have any experienced with building a raised bed? I plan on going to home depot and letting them cut the wood for me, but I also want to put netting or chicken wire on the bottom and build a makeshift cage of some sort for the top.
Kinda like this...

So if anyone has any pictures or a link to a particularly good tutorial, let me know.Last edited by skittles04; 03-15-2013 at 05:48 PM.

Your photograph illustrates what amounts to plantings using large pots in a dark color. I hope they are not in all-day, direct sunlight (north of the Equator, that means southern and/or western exposure).
Because if they are, they'll burn up, unless there is a constant water supply.
True 'raised beds' are not what is shown in this photograph; but are actually large mounds of earth, in direct contact with the ground, surrounded by wood or straw.
There are a lot of great books and magazines that cover topics like this.
Try the series of books by DK Publications and also try Mother Earth Magazine.

Hmm, well they don't have to be that color or that material (I was mainly trying to illustrate the type of netting/wire that I wanted to recreate). I know that some people simply create mounds, but I usually think of the boxes when I hear the term. I plan on using untreated cedar wood like this picture...
It is essentially a large planter, though. I like being able to control the soil quality and wild animal access, however. We have rabbits, deer, squirrels, and chipmunks (among other furry creatures) that I want to keep out. Which is why I'm particularly interested in the wire cage/top in my first post.Last edited by skittles04; 03-24-2013 at 04:11 PM.

I have a raised bed in my yard...along with my neighbor, Farmer Bob We also have compost bins.
Raised beds are super easy to construct...and aren't costly.
You have to stay one step ahead of deer, though. They love gardens...and if your fence isn't tall enough, it's not a deterrent.
A corner shot of my raised bed...early lettuce.
