Neville Longbottom! That's right, he could've just as easily been the chosen one.

^True but he wasn't. Remember what made HP the Choses one was the fact that Voldemort marked him and therefore linked them. Neville merely rose to the occasion when it counted

When Voldermort heard the prophecy, there were 2 babies that could have potentially fit the bill - Harry & Neville. Voldermort essentially made the prophecy about him & Harry when he marked him. If Harry had not been born, Voldermort would have gone after Neville. Would things have played out the same? Would Neville's mom's love be enough to be able to protect him? Who knows (well...I guess maybe JK does...)? But Neville was definitely the runner up.

^I'm not disputing that. But I think that things happened the way they did because it was Harry all along who was meant to take down Voldie, kind of like there were many messianic figures out and about when Jesus came along but only his Word survives to this day.

Constantine had a huge hand in that, but I get your point.

Sometimes I wonder, though, about whether that saying "Nature abhors a vacuum" would be upheld with time travel. (I know, we're venturing toward fantasy land here :P) Like if MLK suffered an accidental death as a kid, would someone else have taken on his role? Would we be celebrating some other great leader today or still be relegated to the back of the bus?

Are people "destined" to become great or does circumstance & opportunity play a larger role than we give it credit for?

So many layers of nerdism in this convo I actually had a similar thought today while listening to a podcast about Apartheid and the other day about the Loving vs West Virginia (I think) case about anti-miscegenation laws but I digress. I think some causes or events are bigger then one man and would have happened eventually, how it would go down and how it would shape history is of course up to debate. The Civil Rights movement could probably have happened through the courts Ã* la marriage equality with no one particular figure standing out or Malcom X' equality through violence ethos could have been what eventually brought the government to strike down Jim Crow Laws. On the other hand, the US could have been like South Africa and resist racial equality until recently, probably to this day, it's not like the rest of the world would been able to do anything about it.
