I'm kind of iffy about these Dove commercials.

    Yeah, me too.

For one thing, it would've been a little better if the artist didn't know who was who when he made the pictures. He knew what the goal of the commercial was, and you have to wonder if he didn't subconsciously make the befores a little bit more unattractive than the afters.

For another thing, this is the same company (unilever) that markets underarm lighteners and skin bleaching creams. And those horrible axe body spray commercials. I do think it's commendable that the people at Dove are trying to make their brand do some "net-good" in the world with their real beauty campaign, though. It's just second nature for me to snark on marketing tactics.

^Dove is a commercial enterprise. Their motives are truly just benevolent. They are trying to position themselves a progressive company for women. It's marketing.

On a side note I think it's sad that some women can't see their true beauty and their true selves.

I appreciate the message in the ad. No doubt that it's good marketing and deserves a side-eye or 2 when the source is fully considered; but I can definitely appreciate the theme of the campaign, and this ad in particular, at face value (no pun intended).

I liked that critique. I actually thought about some of the points she made while watching the ad, before I read the critique. Again, the source may or may not be questionable, but I think in and of itself, the critique gets some strong and very valid points across.
