I sure wish we could get our new puppy to 1) stop being so scary, and 2) bark. We've had him for a week and a half, and he's kinda barked one time. He's still kinda young, though, so hopefully he'll find his voice soon - his voice and his courage!

Congrats Queencece!
The apartment I'm moving into allows cats!!! I'm taking in one friend's cat (she's paying the deposit thankfully), and I REALLY want to get a kitten friend for him. I need to go look at some no kill shelters and find one I like.
How do y'all feel about declawing cats? Is it necessary? Unnecessary? Cruel? Would you adopt one that already had it done vs. taking them yourself?

^^Personally I think it's really cruel. See Is Declawing Cruel?

^Okay declawing my cats is DEFINITELY out of the question. I'll just get a big scratching post and cover it with catnip LOL

I didn't do it to my new furball after reading up on in and yep, my sofa chairs took a hit. I was afraid there'd be a power imbalance with my older cat who is declawed but surprisingly, he's still the boss.

I'm not really worried about my raggedy furniture,I just didn't want my niece to get scratched and be scared of it. I'll be extra diligent in training before she comes over. I don't want to stay being the only person in my family that hates cats lol

You just have to teach your niece how to interact with the cat & how to recognize when the cat wants to be left alone.
On the animal end, get your cat used to human interaction by picking her up at random times and petting/grooming her frequently. The last bit has the added benefit of reducing shedding & hairballs as well as helping you to keep an eye out for pests (like fleas).
Also, I'm not sure how young of a cat you plan to get, but.....kittens are crazy. I mean certified maniacs. They have so much energy and delight in play-attacking anything that moves . So, be prepared for that and teach your niece how to sidestep the cat in those situations.

Glad you decided against the de-clawing. Our cat (who is now an outdoor cat) learned to not scratch just by us loudly saying "no!!" whenever she scratched anything other than her post.

thePerfectFool- Please do not declaw your cat! It is inhumane, unnecesary and impedes the cat's natural ability to protect itself. My cat has a scratching post that works nicely. Speaking sternly to her or spraying her with water deters her from trying to claw up curtains and walls when she's in a funk.
Honestly, my cat is such an adept hunter that she'd probably die from heartbreak if we declawed her.
