Me too. I finger detangled for the first time last week and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I sectioned it into about 20 small sections, soaked each section in conditioner prior to finger combing and two-strand twisting. I'm usually terribly impatient when I use a comb (don't like to section, if I can get away with using a wide-tooth comb on all my hair at once, I will ).

I can't promise I'll go far with this challenge but I will say that I am getting ready to do it again. Let's see if that first time was a fluke or not!

Update: I've finger-combed once since that last post. Used a comb to section (does that count?). I have to admit I took a denman to one of my sections and after all that finger detangling I noticed a HUGE difference in how much more forceful I had to be when I was using the denman. I've been using a denman/wide tooth comb forever and even though the denman isn't so bad relative to all the other tools out there, you don't notice just how much tugging you're doing until you compare it to finger-combing. I know I'm singing to the choir here but seriously I was not the type to consider finger combing until now.

That being said I am still taking this one detangle session at a time.

Hello my name is underthehood and I am a combaholic.... :P

Update: It's been a little over 6 weeks since last post... and last detangle session. I had my hair in TST for about 2 weeks, then a 2 week twist out that became a terrible tangled mess of a bun. Not good. Took about 6 hours (2 days) of finger detangling to get through roughly 15 sections. My fingers are all wrinkly.

In hindsight I think a part of me thought that if I put off detangling long enough, I would grab my denman. I didn't. And that is just cause for celebration.

I should add, all of my parting into the 15ish sections was done underwater (in a sink). Worked great!

    Greetings!
The whole month of Aug. I did a free-form {lock} challenge: No latching/palm-rolling/re-twisting the new growth.

My hair is currently covered up under marley wraps so I'm not officially in the challenge, but I have been doing it and not using tools for about 6 months before putting my hair away for a little while. The growth has been amazing.

I still say no combing preserves BUT you have to be so careful to get the shed hairs out otherwise you will end up with a world of knots.

This part's been really hard to do. I feel like I'm getting more ssks and splitting now that i'm fingercombing. i can't tell if it's because (a) i'm just noticing them more because i'm touching almost every strand every time a fingercomb or (b) the fingercombing isn't working for me or even, as you pointed out (c) i'm just not fingercombing correctly and not getting enough shed hair out

Right now my hair's in box braids and i've been redoing each one and fingercombing as i go along. with the exception of using a comb to make the braids, i've stuck to the fingercombing routine and will continue.

Default Re: Dee's No Comb No Brush CHALLENGING Challenge

I am a no-comb girl! I have been doing this for over a year straight now, whereas I was off and on before. IFor me, it's not a challenge to avoid the comb, but rather a challenge to USE one. Yes, I experience knots from time to time but really it's not so bad. I use conditioner in the shower to help remove shed hair. If I have tied togther strands, I simply cut them apart. My hair care reggimen is the easiest that it has EVER been.

Since Dee set this challenge, I am still doing it and the growth has been amazing. I do it for my daughter as well and although she is only 7 her hair reached her bottom. I don't think her hair lengthy would have gotten that far if we weren't finger combing.

My own hair is very fine but I think I have become a better finger detangler with experience. I don't reach for the scissors so often anymore.

Ooooh, I forgot about this challenge! Maybe I should get back on this plan again, especially because I know my hair needs some TLC after my recent weeks of neglect.
