I'm actually surprised that the media is focusing on the "n word" and ignoring the overall deplorable conditions that her employees had to deal with. I also can't believe a woman with all her money would not be more business savvy. No HR personnel, no workplaces policies, open use of pornography, open sexual and racial harassment, etc. It was like the wild west working for the Deen organization.

It was rich, white, Southern entitlement in all its ugly glory. Did they really think they were somehow immune from standard employment laws?

A lot of people are asking why Ms. Jackson stayed for so long if it was that bad. A smart employee knows to stay long enough to gather evidence. I'm also wondering if any of the Black employees will be filing their own lawsuits.

Wow...I've read through half of this. I'm shocked by the details of this, but maybe I shouldn't be. I really hope they have to file for bankruptcy or something. I feel horrible for the people that had to endure all of these racist and misogynistic comments. What a nasty, toxic environment to be in.


^^ITA with people above. The media has really whittled this whole thing down to a word and a comment. There's such a large amount of bullshyt here to be exposed. Just sickening.

I know that ppl stay b/c they are afraid they won't be able to get another job. They let their fear guide them, and in essence ms jackson was right since she has not been able to get a job in the savannah area after she quit. Especially with the economy being the way it is, family obligations (she was going through a divorce, don't know if she had kids), she was probably telling herself that she was lucky to have a job and that she needed to keep pushing on or through the muck. Maybe she really thought it would get better, I know ppl who for reasons I don't understand stay at a job b/c "it wasn't always this bad" or "it could be worse."

It's not the the "n" word stuff that gets under my skin. I mean that is bad, but she's a 60- something year old white woman who lives in Georgia; it would actually be a miracle if that word wasn't in her vocabulary.

It's the larger issue of this stupid wedding reception party and her general glibness regarding all this mess they were saying and doing. The deposition section on this party was all I needed to read.

Now all sorts of other stuff is coming out. There is a video of Deen at a NYTimes event where she had a black employee of hers come out onstage to make a point about race and it was just bad.

I never liked her anyway, so I'm biased. It is just Schadenfreude in Technicolor for me.

I'm not surprised, tbh. If that's what mainstream media outlets focus on then it's easier to spin Paula Deen as a "victim" of political correctness and overly-sensitive people.

I'm personally not that angry about the actual use of the N-word, but moreso all the other things that were mentioned in the documents. I didn't like it, but I don't think we can get mad, no matter what context the word is used in, if we use it ourselves. We can get mad, but can't expect people outside of our race to understand why they can't use it. It sounds silly when we defend the use of it but get mad when someone outside of our race says it. We all know they know they shouldn't but we will forever hear the "Well I didn't know it was wrong" excuse as long as it stays in our vocabulary no matter how "positive" we try to make it seem for us.

My issue comes in with the whole thinking the plantation wedding was a good idea and mainly all the crazy things her brother said and did. I also didn't like the video where she was talking about how dark "her son from another father" was. Also, the way the workers were treated and talked to by her sons and other relatives are what I have an issue with.
