Orange is the New Black
Soooo after my sister telling me for the hundredth time how much I was missing out on life by not watching Orange is the New Black I finally watched it and LOVED IT! I watch the entire season in 2 days and immediately got the book because I can't wait until the new season to know the rest of the story.
Who else is watching and who do you love!?!?!? My faves are Crazy Eyes, Taystee, Morello. I have a love/hate with Pennstucky! And I love how quickly they get to everyone's back story and weave it into what's going on in the scene. I am super intrigued to know more about Crazy Eyes, I was so not ready for her parents.Carpe Diem

Yeah. I started watching on my phone while I was at work (during a really repetitive task) and I had to quickly turn it off, lol. I'll have to try again this weekend.

You do, it's $7.99 a month, that deterred me at first because I'm cheap. When I watch a TV series on there I usually watch them all during the free trial period and then cancel before I'm charged or if I'm paying just cancel after I've watched the full season.

I heard a lot of great things about this show on various websites I read, so I started to watch. Couldn't get past episode 3, when the black lady inmate with the crazy eyes was hitting on blondie. It was just so stereotypical and reminded me of what I hated about Weeds (same creator): Basically all the people of color supporting characters -- mostly criminal -- kept falling in love with the white female lead. Ugh, no thanks. Other things annoy me about this show too. Yet I keep hearing how great this show is, so I would be interested in hearing some black women's perspective on this show. To those of you who like it, what is there to recommend it?

I actually hated this show for the 1st two episodes, but I think it gets much better after by eps 3, 4, etc. It is in those episodes that the show really begins to tell the backstory of the other inmates, and I find them really interesting (and also sad). If it's any comfort...no other black or brown characters fall for Piper after ep. 3, and I think that the writers do a good job of calling out her faults/narcissism. I'm not a huge fan of the story line of the main character...primarily because of the narcissistic piece, but I really enjoy the stories/lives of the other women.
OMG!!! Somebody made me PANK! Thank you!!!!!

I enjoyed the season or allotment of episodes Netflix has put out thus far. I also don't like the main character. Everything else, including the way the back stories are interwoven seems outstanding to me. I dislike this main character as much as I did the one in Nurse Jackie. It's not a "bad guy/person" dislike. It's the social role and depiction stuff that's underlying in the fabric of the person which is affirmed throughout in spite of the suspended disbelief required. It seems like with this show, as with so many others, the delusions of white privilege are being catered to and used as cheeky obstacles rather than allowed to progress naturally as the intricacies of the other characters are.
I'm also one of the people who felt the interaction with Crazy Eyes was too easy, hackneyed, and a waste of some of the intrigue I still have for that particular character.
One of the characters I did like to have seen developed was the cook. The social interplay of her and her husband was nice to me. On merit, her husband was pushed aside a bit and that slight hiccup was cool to see. The awkwardness of her coming short of getting them "in" homosocially (particularly with vapid hyper-feminine women who lacked integrity) was awesome because of her lack of strength there versus her business savvy and management skills.
I don't like what happened with the girl who freaked out after her abortion. I don't want to spoil it. That's an amazing character with great intricacies. Hrmm. I'll stop.
If you want to see another movie in which white folk being portrayed like that is just grating, check out The Purge. It's disgusting in spite of being such a great concept.
The only time I felt for the main character on merit was when her companion was shooting off his mouth and endangering her as such. That seemed legit and a seriously awkward threat. Also, his BS with the TV series. Instead of telling stories that were in confidence, maybe he could level about him not being able to preserve that for their relationship and his other struggles in that regard. They're both self-absorbed in those regards, but I feel like he's mixing in his inferiority complex with regard to being perceived as less socially appealing or like a "loser".Last edited by Intellexual; 07-31-2013 at 08:08 PM.

I2FreakinI.
My girlfriend and I couldn't get past the first 2 minutes where she is talkin to the bug-eyed woman with her hair all over her head in the shower area. Just no. Also -- if you have to smack me in the face with nudity that soon in I just feel like you don't think that your writing is good enough to draw people in without it. Whether it is or isn't -- i'm not sticking around to find out. Once I see that it's like deuces.
About Weeds: YES!!!!! I was like, "i'm so sick of this ish" .... like EVERYONE was falling for her and it was like, .... I- just- don't-get-it.
Locs 2nd Set: April 3rd 2012 - Yup they're back
