    Default Writers Scraps: Random Thoughts

Read a badly written book recently which was an excellent lesson on how not to write. Something to keep in mind when I start editing.

I took my main character on a test drive to another story just to see if I knew her well enough to write her into any story line, I must admit it was fun.

Quite possibly one of the most brilliant, no-bullshit articles I've read about writing in years:

25 Steps To Being A Traditionally Published Author: Lazy Bastard Edition

I'm on step 5 and have been for the better part of the past 6 years. However, I'm in serious barf mode right now.
Hello, 2021. Glad to see you. Hope you're bringing us goodness and light this year!

i have encountered a deadlock with my story. i edited it - mainly the grammar. i like it just the way it is. but i know it can have more substance, more ummph to it. what am i missing? i am going to have to read this over again.

Personally when that happens I leave the story for a week and then come back to it with fresh eyes.

crap.. the time date stamp says that i havent worked on this story since february which consequently is when work started going from 9 hour work days to 12-14 hour work days and weekends. this job might be paying my bills but it's sapping my creativity.

i need to work out a good balance

You could round up 2 to 3 Beta readers. They can be people (not necessary family) who will tell you the honest truth and give you good feedback. One can give your feedback about the story structure, another one grammar, and another one for substance/plot. Or you can focus on 1 problem at a time and get feedback from each one about each specific issue. That's how Indie writers do it.

ooo I am way too fragile at this point in my writing to let another person read it! for now, it's my secret diary. but this other book i'm writing...i'll let someone else do this
