Joining an alumni chapter of a sorority
Hey ladies!
I'm currently in grad school and I'm really thinking of joining a sorority. It is something I've wanted to do for years (since I was a teen), but I took the long way through the education process (mommy, military, wife, war vet, now lifelong student). The university I attended for undergrad was a small private religious school that did not allow sororities, only "social clubs". I don't currently have any family members who are members of a sorority so I'm not sure of the process. My niece is pledging in the spring, but no help there. My older sister is trying to help but she's not a member or even currently trying to join.
I have been to the organizations website and I feel their purpose and vision falls in line with the person I am now. I am starting to volunteer in the community. I feel I am looking for a sense of sisterhood and like mindedness on a local AND international level. I live in a small town but have a major city 45min/1hr up the road.
Anyone join a sorority in this way? How was your experience, would you do it again? Are you treated differently because you didn't join in undergrad (wasn't an option for me)?
I'm going not to name the sorority here because I'm not sure how others would feel about me looking for info on their "sisters/org"
Thanx in advance.

I can't offer first-hand commentary because I'm not Greek, but 3 of my best friends pledged grad-chapter (one is a guy who pledged a frat) and they have all had good experiences. They did not experience any shade for not pledging undergrad. One difference is that it may be harder to pledge because unlike when you're a college student, you have a LIFE (work, family, etc...) that you need to juggle while trying to fulfill your requirements. However, neither of my friends reported any difficulties with this.
Hope this helps. Good luck!~Love the hair you have~

hi, luvjones,
i pledged when i was an undergrad and am not active now, so i'm coming with fairly limited knowledge of the grad/pledging process...
and i'm only speaking for myself, but i would not be offended if someone approached me to get more information about my organization.
this board has so many folks with greek affiliations, someone could more than likely point you in the right direction.
now those are just my thoughts...probably not too helpful.
btw, i pledged AKA at hampton university in '89 and currently live in VA. if i can help in any way, just let me know! while i'm not active, i know a few sorors who are. good luck!!http://members.fotki.com/bellazaina/

^thanks, MC!
I am unique that I was 'on line' back in the late '70's (undergrad), dropped, then fast forward to the late 80's to pledge the grad chapter (same sorority).
Be glad to talk to ya, if you wish, about my experience.
*waves* Hey there Bella! Good to 'see' ya.

Pledged ZPhiB in a grad chapter. I just wasn't ready in undergrad. Didn't have any issues with anyone caring if you pledged undergrad or grad. A soror is a soror. Been a great experience and never regretted it!

I say go for it. I pledged undergrad but my sisters both pledged grad. They haven't had many problems. It's much love in our sorority.
