Default Corporate Portraits of White Women with Black Hairstyles

    Um, ok then...

    White Women, Black Hairstyles...

It almost sounds like the opening line to a joke: A young black woman takes a bunch of middle-aged white women who she doesn’t know in Woodstock, N.Y., to a black salon, gives them a new “black” hairdo, and then takes their portrait.

Although photographer Endia Beal laughs freely while discussing “Can I Touch It?” the point of the series that she worked on this summer during a five-week residency with theCenter for Photography at Woodstock isn’t about getting laughs.

The rules were simple: After getting their new styles, the women had to agree to be photographed in a traditional corporate portrait, even if they weren’t happy with the result.

Beal decided not to give the women an option of choosing a style. “I said, ‘I am going to give you a black hairstyle,’ and they were like, ‘You’re going to give me cornrows?’ ” Beal recalled of her conversations with her subjects. “And I said, ‘No, we’re going to do finger waves.’ ‘Finger waves? What’s that? You mean from the ’20s?’ And I said, ‘These are a little bit different type of finger waves!’ ”

Looking at the pics is quite amusing...first of all this lady is TOO fierce...

    and ROFLMBAO...

The one with the waves looks uncomfortable.

They all look pretty uncomfortable except for the first one I posted.

My sister posted this on my FB feed. On the one hand I get what she's trying to do but on the other hand I'm just like *sigh*...can we just LIVE, please?

In the other thread I posted that the first lady rocked that hair style like a boss. I really want to believe that she wears dashikis on the weekend and has a biracial son. His name is Jahmal.

This was basically my reaction as well. But even though I got what she was trying to do, I kind of didn't get it at the same time....

I suspect she was trying to create a teaching moment with this, but I further suspect it'll fly over the heads of these women. Having these women get these hairstyles just is not enough to open up an effective and productive dialog regarding the politics behind corporate aesthetics, the resulting double standards OF the politics behind corporate aesthetics, and how it affects black women who choose to wear their hair in its natural texture. Locs are also a large part of this topic which is constantly overlooked for some odd reason; I see more locs in Corporate America than I do "loose" natural hair.

    i agree with this.
is this one of those let's have a conversation about race relations without having to have a REAL conversation about it?

I saw that article yesterday on Huffington Post.

I think they all look horrid, the premise for the photoshoot is vague at best and oversimplified at worst and the execution leaves a lot to be desired. They are all "old" ladies (in their 50s my butt). They all look uncomfortable and the styles are done very amateurishly.

If we want to have a discussion about hair/race/impressions, just have the conversations. These gimmicks only muddy the waters.
