Glue In Locks
Hello Everybody,
I've been a long time lurker on Nappturality and this is my second post.
I have three year old locks and never had any issues with them. No lint, build up, or thinning, until last August. I had a medical procedure done that required industrial grade adhesive being put on my scalp, which, of course, came in contact with my hair. A lot of glue was used, which left the majority of my hair coated completely. I followed the technician's advice and used olive oil to loosen the glue from my hair. The oil did not help and eventually made things worse.
Now I have an oily residue in my hair, that various types of clarifying shampoos cannot remove. The majority of the glue has been removed, but what remains is caked under the newly latched part of my locks.
Also, I have sensitive skin. The glue caused a reaction, leaving me with several permanent scars on my scalp.
I am unsure of what to do. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

My first thought is to suggest that you use Dawn to get out the oily residue- it cuts grease, so it should help with the residue. You may need to do it a few times to get the majority to all of it out of your locs.

I second with dawn. product build is similar to glue in that it's very sticky. one wash with dawn (original blue formula) does the job.

Dawn was the first thing I used. The glue is hard and in flaky chunks. It loosened the small pieces at my roots, but the pieces embedded in my locks have to be manually scraped out. I really don't want to cut my hair, but when I look at it in the light, it looks horrible.

Have you boiled your locs? Sounds crazy, but it's what worked for me when I got glue in my hair. Though mind you, it was not industrial stength. It was that gorilla glue for wood. Also, to be sure the glue is on your locs, not your scalp correct? Here's what I did:
Washed my hair with my baking soda/shampoo mixture (1 teaspoon of baking soda to every 2 tablespoons of shampoo)
Boiled a pot of water.
Soaked a section of hair in the boiled water for 30 minutes. (I had a friend help me)
Washed that section of hair a second time with Dawn to get the now loosened glue parts.
Repeat until all sections have been "boiled" and washed.
On the short parts of locs where you can exactly soak it, have a lot of water handy (and this is where you NEED a friend) and carefully pour the boiled water over your locs. It's really scary because it's so close to your scalp. You may not have this issue though. I did because my back locks are just above my shoulders.
I hope this helps, good luck and hugs.

The glue is no longer on my scalp, just embedded in my locks. I'll look into the boiling method, but I fear that because my hair is slightly above my shoulders, I would end up burning my scalp. I thought about cutting off my hair or taking them down, but I want to exhaust all other treatments before going down that route. This is the first time I've liked my hair, and to a certain extent, felt comfortable with my appearance, since I can remember. I really don't want a setback, but I also don't want unhealthy hair.

When I used bentonite clay in my locks, I also was conditioning with honey. The two formed a type of cement that I was never able to get out. I don't want to discourage you, but I had to take them down, clean my hair and rejoin the locking journey later. But cleaning each hair strand became an obsession for me and necessary for my sanity after a year or so of trying all kinds of cleansing techniques. If you consider this option for yourself, this blog post might help you. So sorry to hear about this!
