Cool Deciding to not have an ugly stage

This is my second time on this journey. I started this journey in August. It's been about 7 months and I haven't had an ugly stage... because I choose not to. I feel like there was power in that. I psyched myself out the last time and through my whole journey I was never fully comfortable with myself or my hair. That was the whole reason they didn't last. Not this time. I am very confident in myself and my hair and it is showing. For my fellow newbies I think you should try to make the same decision and I promise you it will help!
Started my locs on August 9, 2013 and still going strong. Follow my blog to track my journey http://naturaltolocs.blogspot.com/.

This is my second set of locs and frankly, I have to look at old pics of myself to remember that stage. It is over faster then one thinks. Congrats!

When I saw the title of this thread I thought you were asking a question -- "How can I avoid the ugly stage?" -- and I came in here to see if folks were thinking like me, i.e. "What do you mean?" and "Good luck with that."

However, I see that your decision has to do with how you're approaching this new locking journey: with appreciation for the entire process, including the middle ground between baby locs and mature locs. To that I only have one response: AWESOME.
Hello, 2021. Glad to see you. Hope you're bringing us goodness and light this year!

I love it! I really don't like that approach either-bc it's NECESSARY, just like puberty and growing up.... Congrats!

i looked back at pictures of my ugly phase and realized that it wasn't near as "ugly" as it felt at the time.
    Thanks to whoever panked me!

I started in July last year, I'm gaining more confidence every day. This is my first time so I don't know what stage I'm in right now, I do know that I'm learning my hair and what it likes and every day is getting better fo me. I just changed my picture, I will be 10 months on the 17th. Can't figure out why the picture is upside down.

It´s good you choose to be postive like that. it will make your journey easier...I never liked the phrase "Ugly Stage", so I never had it. I chose to call it "challenging". I had loads of shrinkage. That was my challenging phase. I faced it headlong, and I survived....

Hi All. I did not like my locs at all in the beginning. I had high hopes though and just hung in there. I love the locs now and the decision I made to loc up. I think It was just so different from what I had been used to for 50 years of my life. A whole new learning process and an entirely different way to present my self to the world. I took full advantage of wigs and I recommend anything and everything that helps anyone get through their most difficult phases to do that. It's your journey so make it your own.Hats, wigs, loc socks,etc.....and not covering up is fine to. Just do not give up. The beauty is there and it gets better with time.

This is my second go around, too, and plan to have the same mindset. Now I wish I had survived the "ugly" stage before, and I don't want to have those regrets again. I plan to embrace all the stages of this process.

I agree with knottyauthor: It's like going through puberty; right before the swan appears! =)
