Talking New here! (Question about shampoo for locs)

Hello all! I'm new to this website and forum. I've been natural for pretty much a year of my life (I'm 26). Before that I mainly got my hair pressed by going to a salon/professional and eventually I started doing it myself. Eventually, I just felt like I was damaging my hair and decided to go natural. I'm now bored and have been wanting locs for a long time!

I'm not going to a loctician, I want to do it myself due to lack of money and I'd rather just do my own hair. Either way, I know what technique I want to start with, but I'm confused on what's a good shampoo. I keep seeing people say clarifying, but is there ingredients I need to look out for/avoid?

    Hi Jenamour,
Welcome to Nappturality! I am going to go ahead and upgrade your membership so you can post over on the Loc Forum. I will move this thread over there where I am sure you will get the help you need.

There's lots of help on this subforum: https://www.nappturality.com/forums/...n-Do-I-Shampoo
You can find shampoos that say clarifying at your health food store that are safe (Jason's / Aubreys Organics/ Paul Mitchell III are a few).
There's really no 'do not's for clarifying bc they should not be used often and are used to deep clean. Some of us even use Dove dishwashing detergent-don't sleep. It works!

Good luck on your journey. I did my first journey solo- install and maintenance (7yrs). This second journey I pampered myself and had a consultant start them up; however, I maintain them. It works best for my personality too.

    Happy locking!

@Jenamoor Hi. Please do not forget to moisturize your new locs. Don't go crazy with the product but do use water mixed with something very light. Too much will cause unraveling and not enough will cause breakage. I lost 3 locs before I realized I would be bald if I continued to follow my Locticians advice to not moisturize my locs.I won't suggest a product since I do not know your hair type. However, shampoos that clarify can be very drying so proceed with caution. Oh, make sure you dilute that shampoo too. Half water and half poo.

Has anyone used Dreadhead Dreadlock soap?
    http://www.amazon.com/Dread-Head-HQ-...adhead+shampoo

I have still not started my locs because I am reading and getting as much info as I can because I want to be absolutely sure I don't get a problem with buildup in locs and funky smelling hair. Also, still trying to make a list of products and ingredients to avoid on locs.

Anyway, has anyone used the dreadhead shampoo?
