Reading, reading, reading. Even if you don't understand half the content the first time around, you're bound to pick up some vocab and see all those grammar rules you've been learning actually being used. Books that are bilingual (the language you're learning on one side of the page and the language you know on the other) are especially helpful. They can usually be found in specialized bookstores, but if you're having a hard time finding them just get two books, one in each language, and compare them.
Listening to music (and following along with the lyrics), watching movies with subtitles /dubbed (or a combo of the two) is good too. A tip: google top 40 ______ (fill in whatever country speaks the language you're learning) and you'll get introduced to a lot of new artists. If you're looking for movies, translate the phrase "free movies online" into the language you want and put that into google. There's bound to be a website that links you to online movies in the language you want. (You might also want to learn the words for 'season' and 'episode' in your target language, might help you in your searches).
When it comes to speaking, finding a native speaker to hang out with (it's gotta be a patient person) helps a lot, doing a language exchange is an easy way to find a native speaker. In my experience with language exchanges though, you have to have a plan before you meet, pick a book to talk about, a movie, have some questions ready, whatever. Otherwise it can be a waste of time.Last edited by underthehood; 09-21-2014 at 08:10 PM.

Inspiring thread. I just started practicing French...its going well and certainly I've been enjoying the feeling of areas of my brain firing up with language lessons. In the past I've practiced Japanese. Underthehood offered some awesome tips that I'll surely make use of.

libgen is amazing thanks afrocherie! Squiggly, if you specify the language as Arabic you'll find some flashcards and arabic-english dictionaries on page 3.
example: http://libgen.org/book/index.php?md5...BBBCF146C5D2DE
P.S. afrocherie, how do you start dowloading on the site? I tried clicking around the pdf area and nothing (that's the format i'd use)Last edited by underthehood; 09-22-2014 at 06:11 AM.

Thanks! I'll give this a shot. I've just come home from a group study session. I'm giving myself 45 minutes of downtime, then 15 minutes to start some laundry, then it's back to the books. I've got some exams on the 2nd.

Hi Underthehood,
After you find the book you want, click on the title and it should begin downloading. Or from the search results page, look on the far right column, you will see the mirrors, click on any of the numbers, and you will be able to download the pdf doc. I am not very familiar with the site, I just blindly clicked around and was able to download the book I needed.

Re: Language Lovers
I love languages and was a language major at university. I am highly proficient in Spanish and have professional level fluency in German. I am more exposed to Spanish and try to find telenovelas and movies to watch when I can. I also listen to a lot of Spanish language music. It's been a struggle to maintain my spoken fluency but I'm currently succeeding. I'm debating on traveling to Latin America for three months to anchor my fluency a bit more. Depends on my finances.
My German is much stronger. At least twice a month I speak to my German speaking friends in Europe. However, I have a worse time finding quality German language media. Netflix streaming has a horrible selection and German language music leaves a lot to be desired... I'd love to visit friends in Europe but that too depends on money.
I'd like to learn Portuguese, French, Russian and ASL in the future.
