Question Can you trust online reviews ?

I like to do research on a product or service before I spend my hard-earned coins, so I often search the web for reviews and comments before trying something new. I have become aware that some of these reviews are actually false and sometimes paid for by the site or their competitor. How much do you rely on online comments/reviews for valid feedback ?

I take them with a grain of salt, especially the ones at the extremes ie the 5 stars and 1 stars. I look for consistencies in the comments and in the case of negative ones, I ignore what to me look like one offs or what to me sound like the issue is with the commenter and not the product.

I generally read reviews before I buy products. I recently bought a ipod nano 7G without reading any reviews and oh boy, what a mistake that was. I
read the reviews after my ipod stopped working after a few weeks and realised that this was a common problem with this particular product. I was thinking about buying an e-reader but having read some of the reviews on Amazon, I have been put off

I agree with both posts above - i.e. to read reviews and look for a common thread in the comments. It also helps that some sites - like Amazon - tell you when a review is from a verified purchaser.
