Default Henna or PPD free hair color

Hi Ladies!! I've been researching Henna as a healthier option for coloring my locks (black). I wanted to stay away from commercial coloring products if possible. I don't have a PPD allergy but my mother does and I am just playing it safe. Has anyone colored their locs using Henna and Indigo? Have you had any issues with buildup in the loc from either of those? OR is there a GOOD ppd free hair color you can recommend?

Loc'd since 11/22/2010 and lovin it!!!!

    Hello,
I have used henna many times on my locs (not indigo though). I use Karishma henna which I purchase from the Indian grocery store. I rinses out easily to me, however I only let mine stay in for 1 hour. I haven't have buildup issues because I rinse thoroughly and swish my hair around in a sink of water to make sure it is all out. You are doing the right thing in staying away from the PPD containing products.

I've been using henna for a few years now and recently started adding indico. Henna itself creates a coating on the hair which forms the increasing intensity of colour over time. However, I've found it also acts as a clarifier. I henna 2 or 3 times a year. After each treatment, my hair dries noticeably faster and feels lighter when wet. I don't think there's any build-up problem with henna, the opposite I'd say. I tend to add oil to mine to combat the initial drying effect that henna can have on hair.
