Default Re: The Obsession With Edge Control in the Natural Hair Community

When I wore a puff with loose hair, I used to put aloe vera gel on and smooth down my hair. Now when I put my hair up I don't smooth them. I think the problem is that some people become obsessed with having slick edges and cannot do without them. (Using a toothbrush and all that..) Some people feel that your hair is unkempt when your edges are not laying down and IMO that is wrong. The relaxed years did a permanant number on mine so I think I have had enough of the slick edges. With locs, I don't worry about my edges at all and they thank me.

my hair has a mind of its own anyways not matter what I use edge control or gel hours later or even a day my hair/edges feel as though I never put any product on it.. so if they aren't slick down I don't care anymore lol I am just trying to grow and maintain them

The only product that I've found to lay down and hold my edges is this . The EXTRA HOLD is what I use. I do have to be rather heavy handed with it. But since I swim so much it's not a big deal cause I have to rinse all the product out of my hair every time I swim which is about three times or more a week. Discovered this stuff at a natural hair meet up and got it out of a grab bag that was being passed around. I haven't looked back since. The only thing is that it is too heavy for the actual puff, so for that I use III Sisters of Nature which is also a wonderful detangler. This product doesn't flake either.

I only recently realized that I am "supposed" to do something with my edges.

I have a fuzzy halo and sometimes I use edge control to minimize the fuzziness. I never cared for the look of laid edges, fake baby hair. I remember back in the day girls were doing this, using that brown Ampro gel. If I had done that, my edges would surely have disappeared.

Omg. I hate this baby hair layed down, glued to the forehead, fad. It is so cringy to me, or maybe I'm just getting old. 🙈
I mean I'm not above tying a scarf around my head to get my edges to lay, but when it comes to taking a toothbrush to my edges...that's where I draw the line.
