The Obsession With Edge Control in the Natural Hair Community
The Obsession with Edge Control in the Natural Hair Community
He starts discussing the topic at roughly 03:00 on the video. He really got me with "cementing your edges down, but then bam a fro in the back!"

Re: The Obsession With Edge Control in the Natural Hair Community
I think he's on point...and it just proves what I keep on saying about it taking a long time to turn a big ship. Some of these sisters are going to learn the hard way, unfortunately. However, it's their edges and their choice...
As I commented on the video: Having lost and regrown my edges twice, I'd rather have nappy edges than NO edges.Hello, 2021. Glad to see you. Hope you're bringing us goodness and light this year!

Re: The Obsession With Edge Control in the Natural Hair Community
This is my second time in this thread. I've only seen about 2.5 mins of the video. I don't think I need to see any more.
Some of the things today's naturals complain about really gets on my nerves. The only time I can conceive of worrying about my edges is when/if they're gone. Meanwhile, I've seen posts on places such as Instagram that have comments with people asking about how to slick down their edges, etc., and I just...
I've tried to be helpful to some naturals without expressing my real feelings, but I'll make a long story short: In my opinion, people with natural hair need to learn to truly accept its inherent qualities. I know it's a struggle. But as they say--the transitioning process isn't just physical/external. If you want to have slicked-down edges every now and then, fine. I guess. But if you're obsessed and think something's wrong with your hair because your edges won't "behave" you need to know...
NATURAL HAIR IS NOT PERMED, AND WE SHOULD NOT EXPECT IT TO LOOK LIKE IT!!!!
Man. Sometimes it feels good to yell. (I'm really sick of holding back my opinion of certain ideas.)
Our hair is different, and really. That's ok.Last edited by Claire76; 07-30-2016 at 09:11 PM.

Yep! I love my edges, frizz and all! Sometimes I put gel on them, sometimes I don't, and it's fine! I actually like that fuzzy "halo" look, depending on my style.
And there is a diff between smoothing a style, and trying to create false baby hairs with grown behind hairs you pull out of your hairline. >_>
I swear sometimes I'm enjoying a tutorial and then the girl says, "now it's time to slay those edges hunny". My eyes roll all the way back.
This reminds me: Buy some castor oil"Authenticity is true beauty."

I like slicking down my edges because I have a big forehead. It gives the illusions of bangs which I like.

I never understand why a napptural does that. Just brush them, or finger comb, and you´re good to go. I reallyt doesn´t make sense in my world.
I agree with, "cementing your edges down, but then bam a fro in the back!" LOL!

Re: The Obsession With Edge Control in the Natural Hair Community
It's been a long time since I've been on this forum and I'm glad it's still up and running! Mannnnn it's been years since I've been on here and it feels good to be back! I just wanna say that I like that clean and sleek look when I slick my edges down cuz my 4C edges need to be laid hunty lol. I heard someone say that "no one will believe in your hairstyle if your edges aren't laid." Which is true depending on the hairstyle. I mean your edges really do pull the whole hairstyle together. You can't have a high puff with crunchy edges! Lbvs. With a twist or braid out you might be able to hide the edges but even still a little oil or gel will bring it all together.

Re: The Obsession With Edge Control in the Natural Hair Community
I'm "meh" about edges. When I pull my hair back in a bun or puff, use a little gel to smooth all of the surface hair, edges included, and put on a silk scarf for a while to "set it" then take it off when I'm ready to leave the house. I like the way it looks and it works for me.
*shrugs*~Love the hair you have~

Re: The Obsession With Edge Control in the Natural Hair Community
Ha! I struggle with the smooth edge thing. I don't mind them being fuzzy at all, but there are certain environments that I feel require a smooth, slick look. (For some reason, I associate fuzz with little girls and sleekness with adult sophistication.)
That being said, like LBell, I value my edges more than the look, so I deal with the fuzz. When I want them to look smooth I put on a light gel, brush, and use a scarf. The three times I've had them done professionally, I was amazed at how they got them to lay all shiny & slick. That look comes with a product, build-up price so I don't try to recreate it at home.My Travel Blog | October 2007 Napptural of the Month (still looking for the link)
