Locs thinning on hairline
Hello all,
I am new here so apologies if this is not the correct place.
I have been growing my locs for about 13 years now and I cut them every few months just because I do not like all the weight. Recently I have noticed the left side of my hairline seems a bit thin or thin to me. Only that side and it seems to be a very small area. Last retwist I ended up combining a thinning dread with a much healthier one next to it. Not sure if that was the best practice or not but it is what it is at this point. I just bought some jamaican black castor oil and will start using this weekend. I was wondering if anyone has any other suggestions? Or even the best practice to use the oil. Thanks ahead of time

Re: Locs thinning on hairline
Yes, the weight of your locks can rip the hair out of the follicle. Also the retwisting. i would encourage you to latch the edges....you'll save your hairline.
i suggest rosemary drops and aloe vera juice spritzes 2x/day. This is way more effective than JCO. JCO works for some...aloevera/rosemary works for all-just google to ensure you don't have any health contraindications to the EO.

Re: Locs thinning on hairline
Hi WaynePerry! I know I’m late to this, but I figured I could help a little lol. To prevent this with my clients, I make the parts of the front locs a little bigger, so combining it to a bigger one was a good idea. As mentioned before, latching will definitely help. But I have a question, is the side that’s thinner the side you sleep on? And if you tie your hair up at night, what are you using? Sometimes if it’s something with a knot, over time the placement of the knot can cause breakage. A wide band bonnet works wonders. And daily scalp massages with an oil that supports blood circulation will help with growth (peppermint, cinnamon leaf etc...) Also, some biotin oil on the scalp and in the form of a vitamin will help to grow strong hair. I hope that helps!

Re: Locs thinning on hairline
No worries thanks for the reply. I think it is the side I sleep on but can’t be definite about that. It only seems to be one spot though.
I rarely use to tie my hair up but I remember a few months where I would and felt tugging in that area on that same loc. When I sleep I generally just throw my hair in a bonnet.
Since the post I’ve started using JCO, aloe Vera juice, rosemary oil, and peppermint oil. It’s only been a few weeks but looks to be improving. Will update on a few months.

Re: Locs thinning on hairline
I recently let go of my locs i had for 13 years and started over with loose natural hair. I too experienced thiner locs near the hairline and would end up combining them. I also ended up doing the same for my clients when i would notice that the same would end up a possibility for them. Its one of the reasons i decided to let them go as well.

Re: Locs thinning on hairline
I"m on my second set of locks...both sets maintained by latching and gentle tension, secure a night with satin scarf that ties. I've been locked since 2006. I've added a total of 6 locks along my hair line that are growing towards my ear now. I'd be curious to hear your technique? My hunch is palm rolling...I observe many lose their edges with this technique due to the compounding friction over the yrs.
