Default What should I know/ What do you wish YOU had known?

After YEARS (lol) of talking about it, I finally have an appointment to start my locks in a couple of weeks! I came across a thread here talking about lint buildup which I hadn't at all considered!

What are some other things that I can expect or know about maintaining loc? What do you wish someone had told you?

    Woohooo! I'm excited for you!!!!
There's a whole board of great threads to research, hold on....
I dug DEEP in the crates for you...in my archived posts from early 2K's...build up is HUGE. STAY Away from excessive product use. Think dilute, dilute, dilute if at all with locs. Product build up manifests in 3-5 yrs. It's heartbreaking, so be careful:

I never wash my hair... apple cider vinegar and dandruff shampoo works... basically I use products that aren't heavy... how are you going to start them? I started with double strand twists...

@knotty those threads were really good!

Both you, which shampoos do you use in your regimen that don't have junk in them?

I love Dr. Bonners liquid soap and this bar of black soap I got at a health food store. I also use regular products like Pantene and Jamaican Mango and Lime Shampoo. I definitely agree with diluting everything or mixing them up. I use this dandruff shampoo called Denorex- it's very strong since it has salylic acid in it- but it's brown like black soap and works.

I absolutely have shampoo'd my Sisterlocks since day 1. I was terrified' but, it all works out. There are techniques to prevent unraveling. My first yr, I rotated b/t a fw clarifying shampoos ( free of slip/conditioning products)

1)Aubreys has a clarifying green tea shampoo

    2)Desert Essence Lemon shampoo

3)PaulMitchell3 When it was time to turn up and get 'more' out(heavy pollutants/airborn metals etc)..so still use about every 3 months

Now, I mix it up a bit more. After ~ month 18 they were established and now I use a mixture of shampoos and have fun and never run out of anything bc diluting goes a looong way. Through the week, I will moisturize my scalp with Vit E or jojoba when nutrients are needed during the dry months. And, I spray daily with rosewater. Now I just make thatmyself bc it's expensive to buy premade when used frequently. Have fun! The Nappturality boards are a great resource.....read with care and filter. Alot of us come back later to share our uh-oh's.....so research and research more to avoid costly mistakes....Locks are forgiving until they're not .

Alright! Lots are installed via the coil method. The hair dresser told me that I couldn't wash it for a month?

    Congrats! have fun!
Make sure this install matches your personality and lifestyle.
Her advice is sound. The hair needs time to matt. You can clean scalp with witch hazel/cotton ball if you see build up. It's ok to spritz too...there are techniques to help with unraveling. Sounds pretty!

This is my third set of locs and this time around i wish i would have been more clear about the size i wanted when i had my locs installed. I told the loctician that i wanted medium/large size locs and ended up with 150 locs. Six months into this journey and i recently combined them all and really don't like my hair nor the fact that i have go through an extra process of locing. I'm trying make it work instead of getting fed up and starting over.
