Over the course of my 4 year natural hair journey I have found a number of things that have helped me not only GROW my natural hair but also RETAIN my length. I made changes like only using my hands to detangle instead of combs and brushes that actually snag and cause more breakage, learning the porosity of my hair to find the types of products my hair responds well to, and LOADS of other simple yet effective things. If you want to know about all of the other tips i have for retaining length check out the video below (:

What I do to retain length is: No wash and goes, limited use of the puff, mostly finger detangle then use wide tooth comb, NO Brushes (tangle teaser and all that don't work for me), wash weekly, and twists are my go to style.

When I was a loose natural, I found that shampooing my hair every week was drying. I shampooed biweekly and co-washed in between. Low manipulation coils and that worked great for me.

For me personally I just normally wear my hair in a protective style such as braids until I get ready to do my wash routine again. Less is better for me .

    1. Protect your ends.
    2. Do not use excess tension styles that can pull your hair out at the root.
    3. Do not manipulate your hair when dry.
    4. Sleep in a satin cap.
    5. Keep your scalp moisturized and use a warming essential oil like peppermint, with a soothing one like lavender.

    Those are my best tips!

I've found this to be key as well: as little manipulation as possible. Maybe twists or cornrows that stay in place for about two weeks at a time. Daily manipulation is a no-no.

I am trying to get away from washing my hair every week as well. It is very drying, at least for me.

Check the ingredients in your shampoo and make sure it does not contain any sulfates. These are extremely drying.
