Where Do I go to buy these ingredients?
[/b]

Check out your local natural food store, or go to some of the site that listed within the Homemade receipe forum. Sorry, I can't give you the names of some of the site, because I normally purchase my items from the natural food store.

I just made my own Aloe Vera Gel by using:
- Vege-Gel powder that I found at Tesco
- Mixed with 100% Aloe Vera Juice

I didn't take measurements because it was really a spur of the moment thing, but I wish I had. I used the teeniest amount of powder and mixed it with a lot of Aloe Vera juice, I heated it in the microwave for 1 min., stirred and it was done.

Anyway, to this you can add Jojoba Oil, Coconut Oil or Alma oil to make a nice hair gel.

The Vege Gel powder ingredients were as follows:
Carrageenan, Locust Bean Gum, Dextrose, Potassium Chloride, Calcium Acetate.

From research:
"carrageenan interacts with human carotene to give soft skin and silky hair. In hand lotions and shampoos, carrageenan not only thickens the product but also promotes healthy skin and hair. In addition, carrageenan is a natural product and can be incorporated into formulations which rely on natural ingredients for their promotion."

AND

"Locust bean gum (ceratonia siliqua): Derived from the seed of the carob tree; humectant, moisturizer and smoothing. Locust bean gum: Locust bean gum is obtained from the seeds of the carob tree, an evergreen species indigenous to semi-arid areas of Spain, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, and Israel. It acts as a thickener and water-control agent in various foods. "

Dextrose is a thickner, Potassium Chloride I have found listed on a lot of hair conditioners.

I'm going to add my gel to my Shea and Murumuru to see what I get. I know Shea Aloe is really lovely so I am hoping for spectacular results.

edited to add that this mixture contains aloe vera liquid and must be kept in the fridge.

[/b]

Perfect. I need to use my aloe very juice (thought I'd try it instead of gel, baaaad idea). I made a great skin butter that really soothed my eczema with:

Three tablespoons of hemp seed oil
A handful of unrefined shea
a lot of aloe vera gel
one tablespoon of honey
some vanilla fragrance oil

I now have Jasmine and grapefruit essential oil, and once i've bought the vegegel, i'm gonna see if I can recreate...

whoo hoo!

HONEY SPRITZ

1.5 cups of water
2 table spoons of olive oil
4 table spoons of honey

(Well this is the "official" recipe, but I never tried that one, I tried with just 1 teaspoon honey and 1 tablespoon mink oil in 1/2 liter water + 6 drops essential oil (preservative), it works great.)
[/b]
Hey! I was thinking of trying something similar for my twists. Can you just use regular honey?!?!? I don't know anything about this kind of stuff. And do you just shake it all up in the bottle?

I tried it, but I'm not sure if it's what I need for my hair. I think I may need to add more oil because my twists that were nice and soft are now kind of hard. They're not crunchy, they just feel a little rough. Almost like, I'm taking moisture out of them by using it.

I thought it would be nice to have one thread just for recipes.... that when we are looking for something we can just keep track of one thread instead of searching the whole site.... I will start it off with some I have used and some I have found on the internet and here of course...

All Natural Shampoo
Churn the following ingredients in a blender:
1 oz. Olive oil
1 egg
1 Tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar.

Use as you would a regular shampoo.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Avocado and Mayo Conditioner
1 cup of real mayonnaise (NOT low-fat)
1 ripe avacado

Cut avacado in half, remove pit, and scoop out the flesh of the fruit. Mash well with a fork. Add real mayonnaise and combine thoroughly.

Work the mixture into your hair, paying particular attention to the ends (which tend to be more damaged). You can just use this mixture on your ends, if you prefer, especially if hair tends to be oily.

Cover head with plastic wrap, and then wrap a warmed damp towel over the plastic wrap. Let the mixture sit on your hair for 15-20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with water.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Deep Cleansing Treatment for Hair

2 Tbsp baking soda
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
1 tsp mild shampoo

Thoroughly mix all ingredients. Wet hair and massage with mixture; making sure all the ends are coated. Cover head with a plastic bag or shower cap, and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse, and shampoo as usual!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Easy Egg Shampoo

Or, you can put in a microwave-safe glass or plastic bowl and heat in the microwave until boiling, and allow to boil for about ten minutes. Then, remove the pot from the stove or bowl from the microwave and cover with a lid and allow to sit and steep for an hour. Strain the liquid through cheesecloth. Mix this with the baby shampoo. Let cool a little bit so you don't burn yourself with it, then massage it into your hair. Put a shower cap or plastic bag over your hair and wrap your head in a hot towel that has been soaked in hot water then wrung out. Leave mixture on your hair for about 30 minutes, then shampoo.

This is my own personal version of Carol's Daughter Lisa's Hair Elixer. It is great as a moisture sealant and a nightly scalp massage. Be consistent, you will definitely notice a difference.

1 oz Grapeseed Oil
1/2 oz Sweet Almond Oil
1/2 oz Olive Oil
10 drops Fragrance Oil of Your Choice ( I use Dark Chocolate and Vanilla)
5 drops Rosemary EO
5 drops Basil EO
5 drops Sage EO
5 drops Peppermint EO

The fragrance oil is optional. I just hate the smell of sage, basil and rosemary. Here is a further explanation of the ingredients.

Basil EO--hair growth
Peppermint EO--hair growth
Sage EO--hair growth, reduces alopecia, gives shine, scalp healing
Rosemary EO--hair growth; helps dandruff, oily scalp

Grapeseed Oil is a very light oil--my hair hates heavy oils. I mixed it with sweet almond oil (light/medium oil) and olive oil (heavy oil) so that the mixture wouldn't be too "runny" and also so that it wouldn't absorb too quickly. One application usually lasts me all day.

Remember this mix is great for MY hair and scalp. Feel free to tweak the ingredients as you see fit. If you prefer lighter oils, use a higher proportion of lighter oils: Grapeseed, Soy or Rice Bran Oils. If you prefer heavy oils, use a higher proportion of heavy oils: Olive or Castor Oils.

Happy Mixing :P
