i didn't find vege-gel, but i found sth similar with xanthan gum and guar gum. the stuff is actually used in jams to thicken and give a jelly effect. both ingredients are in a anti-frizz balm i use, so i thought let's give it a go. i made some coconut oil smoothener with it. it was just a test batch so i only made a few very small grams.

i'm still testing it out to see effectiveness before i post a recipe. i used it this morning on my edges and they were very smooth. but to be honest the winter depression is really affecting my hair routine. most mornings i can't be bothered to do all that stuff that's good for my hair.

ingredients i used.

xanthan gum
water
cocnut oil
castor oil
glycerin
citric acid

when i'm fully certain of the technique, i'll post a proper recipe. but hopefully Shulta would have worked out sth great before then. Love u girl. U've got skills

Flax seed hair gel

1 tsp xanthan gum or vege-gel
half a cup flax seed gel
a cup distilled water
1 tbl glycerin
2 tbl coconut oil

Wrap the flax seed in some cheesecloth or gauze. add xanthan or vege-gel. simmer in the water for 15 minutes. When u have a consistency you want, let it cool (u can add some more water if you feel it's too thick. always begin with cold water, and use a whisk if it's lumpy) add glycerin add coconut oil, and you are set. you can also adapt the recipe to include honey (in water stage) and aloe vera (at the end when it's cool) or castor oil. i'm hooked on this stuff.

This is a great idea....I love it.

Well, here is something that I concocted just playing around in the kitchen a few weeks ago out of things I just had sitting in my cabinet. My hair has always been extremely dry even when I was relaxing it. It turned out pretty well and my hair was so soft and shiny.

I dont measure anything, I just throw it in a bowl and mix:

Combine the following:
A Cholesterol Treatment (any kind--I used Lekair Cholesterol Plus)
egg yolk
olive oil
honey.

Mix until creamy. Put on hair with plastic cap on top. I just leave it on while I sit and watch TV, play with my daughter or chat on the computer - maybe be an hour or so. Rinse with shampoo.

I also used the olive oil/honey spritz on my hair every nite before bed and wrap it.

LoL...once again, I dont measure anything. I just add water, olive oil, and a touch of honey in a spray bottle and spritz away. I have seen some recipes where they added an EO but I cant afford any of that right now so I just do it without.

i'm recently in love with this from head to toe for winter 'ash season'
thick & rich body oil / hair milk
1 Tb Shea butter, melted
1/2 cup coconut oil
1/4 cup sweet almond oil
1/4 cup olive oil

mix together. add fragrance. put into 8oz bottle with a disk top, b/c as it cools the mixture will thicken too much for one of those flip-spout top bottles. i am finding this simply HEAVENLY right now for after-shower body moisturizing.

if you don't have this exact ratio of oils, the main idea is mixing a Tablespoon or two of melted shea butter into about 1 cup of liquid oil.

I am so glad to see this thread still going!!!! I am going to have to try this!! I have really dry skin and what I use now is ok, but to messy (olive oil or Wonder 8 Oil) what is a disk top bottle, just a screw off top?

a disk top is just a normal screw off top. i normally use jars, if the recipe is going to be too thick for squeezie bottles. Here's some hair spray i made up this afternoon.

Chamomile and Rosehip Moisture spray

Part A

500g of water (the only measurement here, the rest is up to u to decide)
3 chamomile teabags
3 rosehip teabags
2 greentea teabags
coconut milk powder
runny, warm honey

Part B

ground seaweed
water

Part C
glycerin
citric acid (1tsp)
preservative of choice (u need this or else it would all go bad. i used parabens and sodium benzoate. u can just stick to benzoate if u don't want to use parabens. there's a thread on this forum for preservatives)
Rosemary, sage EO (and more if u like)
FO

Slow cook Part A, without the honey, for 10-15 minutes. Longer if u want. When u r satisfied with the herbal tea potency, take off heat. Strain. Dissolve the honey in the tea and let cool.

Part B
If you have a coffee percolater, u might want to experiment with using it to make a seaweed mixture. I found that the seaweed was difficult to strain and even though the grains were miniscule they still seemed to clog up my spray. :dunno:
Otherwise u could try making a tea bag for the seaweed, or straining with gauze or cheesecloth.

Part C
mix the seaweed water with the tea mixture. Add glycerin and citric acid. Let cool. Add preservative. Add EOs and FOs

BUMP

I haven't been in this neck of the woods since I decided to start locing my hair back in December '04!

Question: thebanana butter recipe---deliciously sounding---can I use a substitute in place of unrefined shea butter? I was gonna use it for my lips, perhaps my body, and my scalp...and when my locs mature, on them too!

Thnx!
