Exclamation

Is it true that after you shampoo/condion your hair, its better to end it with a final cold water rinse?

Does it really make a difference what temperature the water is to hair?

I was told today that doing a cold water rinse to finish off a shampoo/condioner session is very good for both scalp and hair...
It closes the pores of the scalp and hair... something along those lines... the result is the hair is left with more sheen and each strand is smoothed out....

:-? Does that ring any truth or make sense?

Ya know I've just read the same thing too about cold water:
http://www.sallybeauty.com/faqs/showquesti...aq=1&fldAuto=46

then I read this

"Rinse your hair with cold water to make it shine.

The theory is that a final rinse with cold water after your shampoo seals the cuticle, helping it to reflect more light. But according to hair and scalp expert Philip Kingsley, author of Hair, An Owner's Handbook (Aurum Press, 1995), lowering the water temperature won't enhance shine. In fact, cold water constricts the blood vessels of the scalp, temporarily cutting off the supply of nutrients needed for healthy hair. What helps give hair a pretty sheen? Rinsing thoroughly so that no dulling shampoo residue remains on your hair."

Interesting...

Yeah, I have heard rinsing with cold water is good to but I have found too hot and too cold both dry my hair out something awful. So now I just try to stay in the realm of warm. But I do love a hot shower!

Alma, ever since you posted on the other forum about cold water, I have been using it on my face and as a final rinse when I wash my hair and it makes my hair feel strong as in when I comb it while it's wet, there's only like 10 strands of hair that comes out on the comb and to for me that is was very very rare. I didn't notice any dryness.

I've heard the same thing about the final cold rinses. I used to do them because it's supposed to seal the conditioner into the cuticle, but now I only do it from time to time. I can't tell much of a difference.

I have read that cold water rinses were good for the whole body as well. When I wash my hair with very warm water and rinse with cold, it feels a bit smoother than with the very warm water alone. I use my herbal ACV ice cold and my hair seems to like it.

Yes I believe it. Hot water (because of the temp) raises & opens the cuticles of hair strands leaving the hair more vulnerable while ending with a cold water rinse seals those cuticles and lays them back down. I don't know about the shine though - I've always just done it to seal my cuticles versus for shine.
