I am new to transitioning (please, be gentle, lol). When I say new, I mean new. I decided today to transition to natural (well, I actually made the step. I wanted to transition for a while, even when I sat in the chair last May for what would be my final relaxer). I am currently 7 weeks post-relaxer and I can say I'm up for the challenge.

My Transition
Hi Scrills,
Your question and answer series was great! I'm a bit sad at the moment 'cause I hope that I have not damaged my natural pattern of coil/curls. I have been trasitioning now since November 2009 (approx. 7 months) and I didn't realise that I should not have been straightening my hair with a flat iron. I have done it all so far to try and see how to get to know my natural hair since my transition. I have tried roller sets, twist outs, braids, blow drying and flat ironing, just depending on the day. I hope that my natural hair pattern has not been altered.
I am at odds as to what to do. I feel that if I keep transiting for another 5-6 months I will be tempted to use heat to style it to match my relaxed hair, but I am afraid to do the big chop since I have only once had short hair and I don't know if I will be happy with it short. It looks like I have about 3 1/2 inches of new growth and about 4 inches of relaxed hair remaining.
I need help to decide what to do and maybe some real guts!!

Hey CDPolk
I transition 2 times before i went Natural. Here is the thing, if you are serious about going natural worry about the natural part of your hair because the relaxed hair is unhealthy. My last time transitioning(before the chop) i wore my hair in strictly braids. i didn't have to worry about the two textures and it was a good up and go style. HOWEVER make sure with braids you take care of your new growth wash it like you dont have braids in. in between i would do bantu knots out. at first i didn't want to do the big chop but honestly you really get tired of the two textures. if you want to tho i suggest a sew in as well. but try to stay away from the heat, cus eventually you may loss your curl patterns and thats like months you wasted to see your natural hair texture

A few questions
Hi Everyone!!
I'm Nikki and i have decided to do the big chop in a couple of weeks -- I've been transitioning since February and i have a couple of questions:
I'm doing the BC so my hair will grow out, so do i still need to get my hair cut (ends trimmed , tape up) every couple weeks?
Trying to find natural products in my price range has proven to be a bit daunting -from what i'm hearing 'Yes to carrots' is a good option -- BUT it contains a 'cone' ingredient -- is it ok to use?
The 'two strand' twist -- are you supposed to do this when the hair is wet? dry?
Ive been reading on a few forums after the BC, to make the hair curl to use gels - is there such thing as all natural hair gels?
------
You guys have helped me so much already -- thanks in advance!!!!

Wigs
Wearing wigs, would that be damaging to the hair through your transition?
