use a list and stick to it when shopping. nothing gets purchased that is not on the list.

It is hard but after a while you get used to it, I find giving myself time to think before I buy anything means giving myself more time to talk myself out of buying stuff I don't need.

Another few tips:
If you have something you don't need sell it or swap it with someone or exchange favours with other people (this includes talents eg: I gave my friend a manicure and she did my hair...we both saved money)

Set money goals for yourself with rewards, this only works if you are a competitive person and really want to reach your goals though

Get attached to money, I find the people I know who over-spend are the people who don't have a true sense of money; best way to save money is to understand money and how it works
