thanks paulicia for the address. i was not pleased when i read the article on faux locs. please! i'm tired of all these so called magazines saying that they're featuring natural hairstyles when they are actually passing off fake hair as natural. when are these (black) publications going to realize that NATURAL, black hair IS beautiful
w/o the help of extensions? it's as if they're reinforcing the stereotype that we need to add something to our own hair for it to look acceptable. i'm definitely writing in my letter of disapproval. :fight

Freeform locs would never make it into essence. I checked out the pictures and I must say......essence has kept up with its tradition pacification.

i finally got a chance to read that article..."mesh"...nasty. But I am loving the style on pg. 56. The very first picture of the twisted afro is one of the "more traditional methods" for locing.

As soon as I get that much length I'm'on be good to go

Well, there are no letters of opposition to the locks story in the most recent issue of Essence. Not to say that no one wrote in about it, but just an observation.

Some how I really doubt they are going to post that in their magazine. At least, not without tweeking them a little.

Any letters written about the "locs" article will be posted in the next Essence issue. We always have to wait one issue over because of publication dates. :smug

I've returned to this thread for two reasons:

    1) I finally read the article. My first response related to the notion of fake locs; after seeing the article and the pics I was basically like :rolleyes this is what you expect from Essence.

But after reading this thread in its entirety I'm like...this is EXACTLY what you SHOULD expect from Essence. And in this respect I find myself agreeing with Expecting.

Remember, Essence is catering to its majority audience: black women who wear just about every kind of hairstyle EXCEPT nappy hair in its natural state AND, I would guess, are self-conscious about looking "just any old way" (e.g., "rough," "nappy," etc.). Insta-locs gives them the look they want without the stress...because (insert heavy ladle of sarcasm here) we all KNOW that having nappy hair is stressful, right? It's bad enough when it's short and rough and won't grow...God FORBID we walk around looking like Buckwheat on top of that. :rolleyes

I'll keep my eyes peeled for letters but I won't be resubscribing to Essence any time soon because unless black women get a MASSIVE clue and start turning away from chemicals and extensions in droves, they won't have any real incentive to change anything they're doing. Better to stick with magazines like Fierce that don't spend a lot of time discussing this crap.

    2) Today in the mall I saw a woman wearing what looked like half-real locs, half (formerly) silky locs. They looked WEIRD, y'all. I can't really describe them very well but I wondered at what point she would be willing to go all the way real. The real locs looked like they were just shy of her shoulders.
Hello, 2021. Glad to see you. Hope you're bringing us goodness and light this year!
