I've been researching my family tree for the past year. What I'm finding is that most sites cost. I like ancestry.com because of all the available records but it costs. Do you know of any free genealogy sites? If so, let's make a list here. Not the ones that offer a free trial and then charge after the free trial. I mean absolutely free with no strings attached. Does any free sites exist?

The library is free. Another member posted that they have links to such sites as ancestry.com for free for its patrons.

Another free website is familysearch.org. It includes the 1880 census, as well as the social security death index. Use it and see if you find some information. I use it frequently.

Thanks! I've never heard of this site. I'm off to check this out.

Try your local state college or university. Most of the time they are linked to the state library and they may have subscription to ancestry.com. That way you can search the documents for free. If you can't print, try using the print screen button and pasting it on a word document then emailing it to yourself.

Thanks ladies! I've really been wanting to find out my family history for a long time. I've been a member of nappturality for quite some time, but never recognized this thread. Glad I did!

For those who do not know, the 1940 census is now available for viewing. All states have not been indexed yet, but family can still be found.
