if you wear braid extensions/boxed braids/2 strands/etc for more than 2 months at a time, DONT remove from your hair and try and detangle this all at the same time. finger comb each section before moving on to take out the next.
and by all means, DONT add shampoo until you've worked out the base build up and major tangles.

DO NOT be discouraged.
If you are frustrated with your hair, put the comb down until you cool off. Buy a wig, but whatever you do, don't take it out on your hair (i.e. dry combing, etc.).

Don't ever use a protein treatment and a detox hair treatment right afterwards. I used aphogee and then my anita grant rhassoul clay treatment and wondered why my hair felt the way it did. Hmmm.....It was such a waste of the anita grant stuff. (The why is, one counteracts with the other.)
Thanks to my angel who made me PANK again!!!

Do not be afraid to trim if need be. Believe me, I know when you are trying to reach your hair length goals, it can be so hard to cut off damaged parts or split, rough ends and let go of all that hair. However, it is better to lose a little bit of hair than to lose a lot due to breakage and poor hair health. Unless you are having some possible health issues, it will grow back stronger and healthier.
Know when to let go of those things which do not serve you, but force you to serve them

Do not use a product in an attempt to change the overall look of your hair. Specifically, curl boosters and enhancers etc. These products are meant to enhance what is already there. If you have no curl/coil pattern don't expect that a curl activator will suddenly give you what you are looking for.

Don't rely on protective styles to promote growth always. Protectives styles (for some) can actually do more harm. Just make sure you detangle carefully and take you time.
Take care of your edges, avoid prolonged tension, ie braids w/extenstions and puffs that are too tight.Natural since 1998.

Don't be impatient. Learning your natural hair, what it likes and dislikes, takes time. Continue to be patient with your hair, and your hair will tell you what it needs to be its best.

Don't stress out...and do not feel like you are alone in dealing with your hair. Do use the search facillity on NP, it is more than likely someone has had a similiar problem and found a solution on the site. This place is a worth of knowledge...use it....

Dooooooon't buy too many products. Okay, ajargon kinda covered that so more: If something works half well, tweak it and see if you can get better results from it before you give up on it. (I.e. like adding water to glycerin stuff, adding oil to conditioner, etc) And see if you can find stuff you already have that'll work (stuff from your kitchen) before you go to the store.
