It's Gardening Time!

this year i'm doing a large garden. i'm also starting from seeds. is anyone else starting from seed this year. i purchased the trays with the peat and seed starter. i completed one tray last night. i also have the larger seeds i plan putting straight into the ground after the last frost down here. this is what i plan on starting this year:

tomato
butter beans
pole beans
lettuce
cabbage
collards
mustards
bell peppers
cayenne peppers
sweet banana peppers
parsley
lavender
coriander
yellow squash
zucchini

Wow, Aquababie, that sounds like it's going to be a HUGE garden and lots of work. Good luck!!!
I'm too lazy to do so much gardening and seeds for me is just extra work. I like buying small starter plants and just putting those in the ground after the last frost and let them grow. I like growing things that I know my family will eat and that are easy to grow. I'm doing again this year: potatoes, tomatoes, pumpkins, zucchini, onions and garlic.

Woah... you ladies are inspiring. I have several flower garden areas as well as a butterfly garden area. But no fruit or veggies. This year my goal is to start from seeds. Last year I bought a grow light for the seeds but it didn't work well. Plus it looked like I was "growing something else" in my basement :lol:
This year I've already started buying seed packs I'm going to wait a little closer to the last frost and put them directly in the ground instead of starting inside.

i say if i can at least get some going, it will help with the vegetable portion of grocery this year. my collards and cabbage seedlings have already started to poke through. i'll post pics in a few days.

I started my seeds inside in the cardboard egg crates two weekends ago: tomatoes: beefsteak, 4th of july, cherry, roma, and a few others. For the first time I started tomatillos. Artichoke (a periennial -- wish me luck), cabbage, peppers. I also started some zinnias in small pots. I plan to plant, from seed directly in the ground, green beans, beets, okra, cukes, dill, basil and I will prolly try to find some habenero and cayenne pepper plants.

The most exciting thing I've done is I purchased a Honda cultivator ... yeah mayne!! Haven't used it yet, but will do so within the next seven days. I will try to share some before and after pics.

Please give feedback on how the cultivator works. I live in NC and my soil is pretty much like the
red clay soil of Georgia. When I first started gardening(years ago), I had a man come till and amend my soil
with a tractor. Nevermind, I live in the city with a postage stamp of land! It worked though but it needs
to be renewed (the soil) and I don't want to disturb some of my perennials.

as to my garden...we're in a drought with limited watering, so I'll rely on my perennials and my tomatoes,
peppers, 'cukes, and herbs go in pots only this year.

I am going to make and attempt to do and herb container garden.

Basil, chives, sage, thyme, rosemary. parsley, etc.

I have the container, now I just need to get out there and get to it. It was very hot in this area the last few days now it is a little cooler. Hopefully Friday I can get started on it.

Okay SilverQ, I used the cultivator this past weekend and it is outstanding. I come from a family of gardeners ... my aunts have the Mantis, my Dad has a Craftsman Tiller, which is big and good for breaking up hard soil and destroying growing weeds. He tilled the garden, i/e/, turned the soil over, much like what your friend with the tractor does ... but of course the tiller is on a much smaller scale. Two weekends passed and he turned it over again, I went behind him with my cultivator which ground the soil down really fine ... the soil was spongy and very soft.

I highly recommend getting the Honda tiller ... it is costly, but if you plan to maintain a garden, it is well worth it ...
