i started my locs in February 2007 and i have been going to a loctitian approximatley every 3 to 4 weeks. due to my schedule and some other things in life lately i haven't been in almost 6 weeks and the other day i started looking on this site to see if i can find info, basically i want to start doing my own hair, so what i need to know is what process should i do on my own. i hear about spritzing and oiling and no poo and shampooing and conditioning and i need to know what routines people use when they self maintain their own locs. i did twist them the other night but i didn't have any clips so it did make them neater but not as neat as the loctician, plus i didn't have any products accept for some glycerin stuff that was used on wavy styles . so i guess i just need advice on how to start taking care of them myself. what products i should use.

hey there--i just found this thread and here's what i do to maintain my locs:

i spritz everyday with a combination of water, lavendar and rosemary essential oils.
i rinse my hair 2-3 times a week under the mist-er of my shower.
i fully wash/retwist every two weeks using a diluted shampoo. i am currently using jojoba oil, lavendar and rosemary eo's (essential oils) on damp hair for the retwist. occasionally i will use a little loc gel if i feel that i need additional hold on the retwist.
i will give a VERY LIGHT "smooth it down" twist to locs that look a little out of control during the week after the daily spritzing/rinsing if i feel it's needed. (don't twist the roots, just kinda smoothing the loc.)
i'm not using conditioner yet, as i've only been loc'd since january 4 of this year. the jojoba oil seems to be helping to keep the moisture in my hair--it feels yummy! hope this helps! hugs and peace, janel by the way, check out my fotki--address is in my siggy!! i've got a couple of videos posted too!!

I have changed my routine a zillion times.

Right now, I wash once a week, retwist at that time with very light hands, sweet almond oil and EOs...I don't care if it's not tightly twisted. I don't want thinning locs later. And since I retwist weekly, I have to be extra careful. I let my hair either air dry, or I blow dry my locs a bit (on the lowest setting) to help the drying time along. I spritz twice a day with spring water, sweet almond oil and some EOs (depending on my mood, will depend on which scent/EO I choose for my spritz at that moment), and because my scalp loves oil...I oil my scalp with coconut oil every day. When I spritz, I don't allow the mixture to touch my scalp...that way my roots won't frizz up too badly for the week. So far this appears to be the routine I am going to stick with for a while. I use to retwist with a honey/aloe vera gel/EVOO mixture.
    Fikir Bandinet!!! [/i]

Ive been doing the DIY thing for about 2 years now, here is what works for me!

I wash my hair weekly/every two weeks.
    I retwist every 3-4 weeks.
After washing I oil my locs with an oil mixture of olive oil, vitamin e oil, and coconut oil.
I retwist my locs (via palmrolling method) with a mixture of aloe vera gel and my oil mixture.

    All done!

Pretty simple routine, no? Its best that you find the minimum amount of product that works for your hair then stick with it. Now if you are looking for tips on HOW to retwist or how do certain hairstyles, you can search around here or try looking it up on youtube.

    Best of luck to ya!

wow that sounds great! i just did my first retwist by myself 4/17/08...i've decided i'll start retwisting every 4 weeks...and washing every two weeks. i've started budding, but am not locked yet.

i do have a question though, have you ever noticed any flaking with the aloe vera and oil mix? when i went to a loctician, they used a shea butter mix and i had bad flaking...then when i retwisted myself i used mango and lime...still noticed a little flaking, though not nearly as bad as i had before. just trying to find the right retwist product that wont cause any flaking.

    thanks for your help!!!
