I have a container garden and I grow: collards, kale, spinach, swiss chard, celery, sweet bell peppers, black-eyed peas, pinto beans (not coming up yet), broccoli (failing), brussel sprouts, okra and corn (failing). I am also going to plant some herbs and edible flowers probably in the fall.

Im gonna poke my head in this thread...ive been chomping at the bit for THE longest time to start a container garden on my balcony (which is quite large, so im excited), but ive been learning so much, ive been experiencing analysis parlysis, lol.

However, i think ive settled on creating a container food forest. Im kinda interested in permaculture and one of the ways to design your container garden using permaculture is to do a food forest. Basically this is grouping your plants in such a way so that they ultimately benefit each other in growth, feeding, and fending off pests.

Here's a cool article on it:

    http://www.theinnovationdiaries.com/1422/food-forestry/

So, basically, now all i need to do is get started...with the containers, the plants, the seeds, potting soil and fertilizer, not to mention the ambitious list of veggies, fruits and herbs i wanna grow and i KNOW folks say to start small, but i figure if ima get into this growing food thing, im tryna get baptized by fire so i can learn faster lol....sigh, so much to do.
