Now, almost NO ONE has relaxed hair anymore. I interview guys with braids, twist outs, all sorts of natural hair. No one considers it "unprofessional" and I love how much times have changed.

I know! When we were in the early days of our hair revolution up in here, it felt like we would NEVER get here. And I feel we have finally arrived!

Even my niece, who couldn't wait to get a perm when she was 13 has come full circle. Well, almost. She hasn't had a perm in over two years. She still loves her weaves and sew ins, but these days she's been opting for cornrow extensions. And she just landed a job as a personal banker after graduating from college with a business degree.

And her permed up mom? Well, she started locing six months ago, lol.

I see a lot of people go into interviews with multi colored hair like purple, green, pink. It's mostly yt folks though.

I like that brown folks are embracing their natural hair and being confident to rock all different styles. I see locks every where these days. It's mostly on men but I do see the sisters looking fine wearing their locked styles.

So, remember back in the day, how we would go round circles about what was "professional" hair to wear on an interview? Well, I'm so incredibly over that conversation. I've been unemployed for coming up on 6 months. I've been wearing plaits all this time and each time I went on an interview I would take my braids down and do a braid out. So cute but very time consuming cause I would come right back home and braid it up.

Ain't nobody got time for that!!!

So last Friday I decided to wear my hair in large plaits to an interview for a training and development specialist. I wore business casual attire, put on some lipstick and earrings. Did my interview and gave a 10 minute presentation. Now honestly I thought my presentation had bombed, lol. Apparently it had not because yesterday, I got an email from the recruiter who said I was the top candidate and they just had to talk with one last reference. If I'm reading her correctly, my job offer should come tomorrow. Woohoo! Wish me luck y'all.

So much for certain hair styles being unprofessional!

I would like a C-Suite level in an HCO-but for real-most sisters that make it to that level have perms and ignore the fact that they black. So, I submit my application but would be shocked if I ever made it. But, I'm up for the challenge. Like you, I love who I am and that's just not compromisable. Life is too short to live mine for anyone else. OFF THE TABLE. If I have to alter myself to get the job, I really dont need it and that's fine.

I didn't say I don't like braid outs. Mine are ridiculously cute.


They're just very time consuming. Let me back up a bit. For the past five or six years, I've dogged my hair out something terrible by wearing a puff. The constant combing and popping over the years did a number on my bra strap length hair and fast forward to this past June before I lost my job, my hair was barely shoulder length. If you knew me from back in the day on NP, I was in constant hair-length challenges and I always babied my hair. That finally grew old and I discovered the puff, though destructive, was an EXTREMELY easy go to style.

But when I got laid off last June, I was laying around the house, not combing my hair for weeks on end, and I ended up with crazy knots and matted hair. On three separate occasions, I had to break and cut knots out of my hair. That's when I started keeping my hair braided and that's when I discovered that braid outs gave my hair wonderful definition. But from past experience, I know my hair cannot handle being out for long periods of time. So I would go on interviews and come home and braid my hair back up. As my interview schedule picked up, I was constantly braiding up and unbraiding my hair. That got old. And on this last interview, I was like, shoot, I ain't taking my hair down anymore. I figured my hair wasn't getting me any job offers so why bother, lol.

Then bam, the one time I didn't take it down and wear a braid out, I got the job!

First, congratulations on the new job!

Second, yep, I remember those discussions. I was abroad, so I really didn't have to worry that much. In South Korea seeing a black person was news enough. They weren't worried about my hair.

Third, I just had a similar experience in October. I had to fly to north Dallas for an interview. I'd had surgery earlier in the year, so I'm dealing with the dreaded hairline hair loss. I decided to not wear headbands, so I felt that I was in a bit of a pickle. I decided to just wear a twist out with no headband. They didn't care. All was fine. I got the job, and they flew me back the next week to train.

There are stories of discrimination regarding our hairstyles, but, honestly? Those are the sorts of people that would find another reason too.

Hey congrats to you too! Shoot, I remember when most folks on here found plaited hair/w no extensions unprofessional. Or parted hair unprofessional. I can't say that prior to this go 'round with my job search that I'd have worn my hair like this "ever" to an interview. But shoot, I was simply tired of taking my hair out of braids and putting them back in braids after each interview. My poe scalp! When I wasn't interviewing I was wearing my hair in plaits 24-7 for weeks and weeks on end. I wore my hair like this to many dressy occasions and just decided "what the heck" an interview was certainly fair game. It's normal to me, and so it becomes normal for everyone else.

You are sooooo right. And quite honestly, now that I'm in my job, I'm probably the best dressed person in my office. What they're calling business casual, I'd call business grunge. So I just don't see how anyone could have an issue with my hair when their attire is questionable. LOL.
