Interview hair
So, remember back in the day, how we would go round circles about what was "professional" hair to wear on an interview? Well, I'm so incredibly over that conversation. I've been unemployed for coming up on 6 months. I've been wearing plaits all this time and each time I went on an interview I would take my braids down and do a braid out. So cute but very time consuming cause I would come right back home and braid it up.
Ain't nobody got time for that!!!
So last Friday I decided to wear my hair in large plaits to an interview for a training and development specialist. I wore business casual attire, put on some lipstick and earrings. Did my interview and gave a 10 minute presentation. Now honestly I thought my presentation had bombed, lol. Apparently it had not because yesterday, I got an email from the recruiter who said I was the top candidate and they just had to talk with one last reference. If I'm reading her correctly, my job offer should come tomorrow. Woohoo! Wish me luck y'all.
So much for certain hair styles being unprofessional!

Re: Interview hair
You don't need luck, it sounds like you may already have the job.
I have locks and for interviews I have worn a colorful tam that goes with my outfit and covers my locks completely. Most folks, including black folks, have asked me what I was wearing, how much hair I was hiding under the tam and what my religion is. Folks are a little more relaxed with interview attire these days. They see natural hair enough and may not be as biased as they were back in the day.
Sometimes, I feel discriminated against, but it does not make me angry.
It merely astonishes me.
How can any deny themselves the pleasure of my company?
It's beyond me.

Re: Interview hair
You are so right. Over the past several years, I have been laid off a couple of times from a couple of different companies so unfortunately, I've been in the market for a job much more than I have cared. I have yet to interview in a suit like back in the day. I'm business casual all the way. Honestly, the tide has really turned with regard to the acceptance of natural hair. Especially on our end. We're comfortable so that makes it a non negotiable. I can't believe that it took me this long to wear my plaits to an interview and you best believe I'll be wearing my hair like this to work.

Re: Interview hair
Yes, definitely on our end. Folks aren't trying to 'assimilate' with regards to their hair as they use to years ago. I don't care to either, whether it is with a predominantly black or mixed work place. Folks are more comfortable in their own skin and way of life.
I'm business casual also. Gotta love the ease of slacks, a nice blouse and a cardigan.

Re: Interview hair
Girl, YAAAAAS, ALL day long-
I remember the conversations about IV hair, blablabla
And On the offer-CONGRATULATIONS
Enjoy your holiday!
I would like a C-Suite level in an HCO-but for real-most sisters that make it to that level have perms and ignore the fact that they black. So, I submit my application but would be shocked if I ever made it. But, I'm up for the challenge. Like you, I love who I am and that's just not compromisable. Life is too short to live mine for anyone else. OFF THE TABLE. If I have to alter myself to get the job, I really dont need it and that's fine.
Proud of ya and thanks for sharing and representing!

Re: Interview hair
Hi cutenappygrl!
I didn't say I don't like braid outs. Mine are ridiculously cute.
They're just very time consuming. Let me back up a bit. For the past five or six years, I've dogged my hair out something terrible by wearing a puff. The constant combing and popping over the years did a number on my bra strap length hair and fast forward to this past June before I lost my job, my hair was barely shoulder length. If you knew me from back in the day on NP, I was in constant hair-length challenges and I always babied my hair. That finally grew old and I discovered the puff, though destructive, was an EXTREMELY easy go to style.
But when I got laid off last June, I was laying around the house, not combing my hair for weeks on end, and I ended up with crazy knots and matted hair. On three separate occasions, I had to break and cut knots out of my hair. That's when I started keeping my hair braided and that's when I discovered that braid outs gave my hair wonderful definition. But from past experience, I know my hair cannot handle being out for long periods of time. So I would go on interviews and come home and braid my hair back up. As my interview schedule picked up, I was constantly braiding up and unbraiding my hair. That got old. And on this last interview, I was like, shoot, I ain't taking my hair down anymore. I figured my hair wasn't getting me any job offers so why bother, lol.
Then bam, the one time I didn't take it down and wear a braid out, I got the job!Michael Nathan White * My big brother * 1953-2011* Happy Birthday MichaelJune 24thWe really, really, really miss you!
