Coconut Oil

Coconut is currently one of the most underestimated and underused of all the oils with regard to natural hair care.

It is an edible oil, extremely high in saturated fats (over 90%), is stable at very high temperatures and has been a main source of fat for tropical humans for thousands of years.

But the benefits of coconut oil reach beyond its nutritional value.

It is a common ingredient in soap-making and tends to make the soap very hard but it lathers extremely well, even in hard water. At room temperature, coconut oil can be partly solidified and white, while when warmed, it becomes clear and light.

Health benefits of coconut oil can be attributed to its chemical make up. It contains lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid which provide antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial and soothing properties,

When used on the hair, coconut oil can reduce protein leaching, thereby strengthening the hair shaft and improving the hair's life. Scalp conditions such as itchy or painful scalp such as experienced during transitioning out of the relaxer, dandruff and certain types of dermatitis can be releived by the application of coconut oil and it is a very effective deterrent of lice. Regular application of coconut oil on the scalp will improve the scalp's balance and health, while allowing it to breath without leaving a heavy coating. It can be left in the hair between shampoos. In tihs way, it can help in hair's growth by providing the optimum scalp environment for hair production.

{googleads}One little known fact is that coconut oil is a bruise healer. It has a similar action as arnica in accellerating the healing of bruising and blood pooling under the surface of the skin. Coconut oil reportedly kills viruses that cause influenza, measles, hepatitis, herpes, SARS, etc. It also kills bacteria that cause ulcers, throat infections, UTIs, pneumonia, and gonorrhea. Coconut oil is also effective on fungi and yeast that cause candidiasis, ringworm, athlete's foot and even diaper rash.

So all in all, we think coconut oil is a staple oil and should be used in your natural hair routine on a regular basis.

My mother used coconut oil in all of her kids hair, she rubbed it on our skin after showers and she cooked with it. So as you can guess I've been using her methods all my life (even though I'm only 17 :p ) and I never knew some of the capabilities and properties that it held until I read this. I never use anything but natural coconut based shampoo and conditioner (no sulfate), and after I wash my hair ( every two to three days) I treat my hair with hot coconut oil (leave in). It has worked for me and my sisters as well as distant kin. My coconut oil is home made. You can buy pure unprocessed coconut milk in a can and boil it down in a pot until the oil is left. I store it in a squeeze bottle. It will be solid at room temperature, but just sit it under running hot water and presto!! You have oil :)

  • Coconut oil is the most versatile oil of them all! You can use it for so much. Generally it is very well tolerated even for those with sensitive skin. And that's a great idea about boiling it down for its oil. Thank you for that!

I have read on topessayservice.net that actually coconut oil is really good for you. First of all for nutrition and secondly for your skin and hair. It helps against the split endings of your hair.

I do not think that it is underestimated. You can easily google some information on the hair care and there will be definitely advises to use coconut oil. Coconut oil can quickly restore damaged hair structure; it perfectly protects hair from the harmful effects of aggressive solar radiation, salt water, which can also be considered rather aggressive environment, and from drying wind, and from extreme temperatures. It makes the hair healthier generally. There is also a lot of information on coconuts through this link.
