Relaxer Sales Drop

Written by

Now this is positively scrumptious news... It has taken some time for people's inner nappturality to show financial hits to the relaxer industry  but finally...

UPDATE:Since the original publication of this article, relaxer sales continue to decline.

Research from Mintel International, a European-based global marketing firm has found that Natural Hair becoming the new NORM. Relaxers for Black hair account for just 21% of black hair care sales these days and the sector has declined 26% since 2011, when sales reached a high of $179m. These figures are based on their studies and enquiries about them need to be directed to them. However I am not at all surprised at these figures and have bo reason to doubt them. Mintel's research also predict the relaxer-buying market segment value will decrease to $152m this year, down from $206m in 2008.

One important fact for Nappturality.com coming out of these figures are, in the past 12 months, 70% of black women say they currently wear or have worn their hair natural (with no relaxer or perm), 53% have worn braids and 41% have worn locks. That is brilliant news.

“The natural hair care trend is driving an increase in sales of styling products such as styling moisturisers, setting lotions, curl creams, pomades etc. But the increase has caused the relaxer segment to decline in sales,” said Tonya Roberts, multicultural analyst at Mintel.

Shampoos and conditioners formulated specifically for African American hair is estimated to climb to $257m in 2013, up from $211m in 2008, while the styling products segment including pomades, butters, mousse, gels etc is also expected to climb from $220m in 2008 to $268m in 2013.

Keep the relaxer sales moving downward sisters, for your health and your hair!
