The species is found in parts of the Amazon Jungle, northern Brazil, Guyana, Trinidad, and some regions of Central America and the oil is extracted from the pods of the Pracaxi (Oil Bean) tree. In the Amazon Jungle Pracaxi oil is called "sutura da mata" (jungle suture). This is because of its incredible ability to repair and heal damaged or cut skin, both lesions and wounds. Its bark is also used for snakebite and scorpion stings. Pracaxi is also and called "the oil" and "miracle oil" by consumers nowadays and is one of the highest sources of Behenic acid of all the plants known to science.
The oil of the Pracachy tree is extracted in a rudimentary way by macerating the seeds with a mortar then cooking until the oil rises. To this day, the seeds are collected along rivers, streams, and beaches, dried in the sun, and stored for selling or processing.
Rich in organic acids with antioxidant, antibacterial and antifungal properties. Pracaxi oil has been used for generations for treatment of skin spots, severe acne and scars and also as an efficient all natural remedy for psoriasis and rosacea. Pracaxi oil also contains a high percentage of lignoceric acid which carries strong moisturizing properties.
For use on hair, this oil is not a carrier oil, but an oil to combine in small amounts with other oils to combine benefits. It blends well with lighter oils such as Jojoba and Argan.
