"Coating" Your Natural Hair
Can a coating of Shea butter be as beneficial to hair as for skin? It sure can! Coating your natural hair with product gets too much of a bad wrap. The truth is, natural afro type hair is not the same a caucasian hair, which gets weighed down and oily when too much of a rich product like shea butter are used on it. Even a small amount can flatten that hair type out badly.
But on our highly textured hair, with its graviity-defying fullness, shea butter acts as a protectant, a conditioner and a smoother all in one, enhancing sheen and improving flexibility. When used on damp hair a rich butter locks moisture in, on dry hair it helps maintain hair structure during environmental stressors such as excessive dryness, heat and wet.
Yes shea butter used in the morning will add a coating your hair, although much will be absorbed, break down, be worn off or rubbed off during the course of the day.
BTW, coating your hair is not the same as SMOTHERING your hair. Shea butter will still allow your hair to 'breathe.' It is not a wax, (eg beeswax) or a petrochemical grease like vaseline or mineral oil, which will totally remain on your hair until it is washed out. Though excess wax or grease may transfer to your hands or onto your headwear.
When is best to use a rich butter?
- Right after washing and towel-drying your hair
- Before styling dry hair
- Before bed and sleeping with a sleep cap
- As a deep conditioner you want to rinse out
- Daily between washings
- As an aid to relieve itchy or dry scalp conditions
Pro Tips for Using Shea Butter:
- Experiment with how much to shea butter to use. Generally, porous hair can tolerate more butter than non-porous hair. Start with a little and work your way up to the max you can use.
- Do not use rich butters on locs or in styles that are planned to be kept for weeks or months at a time.
- Do not use butters on wigs or synthetic hair.
- Use only pure shea butter from reputable retailers and beware of additives.
- Use Shea butter as the first thing you use in your routine, before adding oils or other products.
